Paul Bradley Clapp, D. May 28, 2014
Paul Bradley Clapp, age 85, passed away on May 28, 2014.
He grew up in Plumtree (Avery County), North Carolina. After serving as a Navy pilot during the Korean War, he graduated from Davidson College. Paul married Carolyn Phillips, and they settled in Knoxville, where he worked for many years at Miller’s, Paul Parrott’s, and Paul’s Fabrics.
Like his Biblical namesake, he was a bondservant of the Lord Jesus Christ, faithfully serving as an officer and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. TW Clapp and Nell Kesler Clapp, and siblings, Martha Hayes, Mary Stinson, and James Clapp.
Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years; their four children, Bradley (Lisa), David (Kelly), Mary (Tim Schirm), and Charles (Tisha); fourteen grandchildren, Adam & Eli Clapp, Peyton, Emma, & Caleb Clapp, Margaret, Abigail, & Thomas Schirm, and Drew, Mary, Jasper, Mitchell, Marty, & Nora Clapp; four siblings, Helen Greene, Walton Clapp, Nell Smith, and Jean Isaacs, and their families.
The family will receive friends at Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 1 beginning at 2:00pm. A funeral service and interment in the church cemetery will follow at 4:00pm. Memorial gifts may be made to Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church, 47 Bob Taylor Road, Newland, North Carolina, 28657.

Leon Barrier (Oct. 17, 1939 – May 26, 2014)
Bealer Leon Barrier, age 74, of Pineola passed away on May 26, 2014 at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born October 17, 1939 a son of the late Grover and Virginia Loudermelt Barrier.
He was a Master Mechanic for the United States Air Force where he retired as a Master Sgt./E-7.
Leon was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and enjoyed bird watching, woodworking, fishing and riding his motorcycle.
Along with his parentsLeon was preceded in death by his: daughter, Danielle Barrier Harmon; a sister, Dora Furches.
Leon has left to cherish his memory his: son, Bo Barrier, and his companion, Julie Hodges, of Pineola; step-daughter, Jessica Brown of Fort Payne, AL.; sister, Barbara Oxford of Concord, NC.; grandchildren, Gus, Emmaline, Hopper, Baxter; special friend, Marilyn Ball of Newland, NC.; Cousins “Family Night Bunch”, Pat, Virgil, Shelia, Glenda, Jamie, Rebecca, Molly.
Funeral services for Bealer Leon Barrier will be conducted on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Cotton Ray officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Cindy Elaine Lee (July 15, 1964 – May 25, 2014)
Cindy Elaine Lee, age 49, of Newland passed away on May 25, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Dorothy, NJ, she was born July 16, 1964 a daughter of Fredrick Lee of Dorothy, NJ and the late Peggy Lashley Lee.
Along with her mother, Cindy was preceded in death by her: brothers, Freddie Lee, Rodney Lee; sister, Lily Nance.
In addition to her father, Cindy has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Hazel Ingram and husband Paul of Newland; son, Charles Smith and wife Meloney of Newland; spouse, Tony Shell of Newland; son, Robert Smith of Millville, NJ; son, Timothy Ray Smith; daughter, Heather Turbyfill of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Delila Ingram, Deanna Ingram, Charles Johnson, Annie Johnson, Bethany Johnson; brother, Jimmy Lee, and wife, Sandy, of Mays Landing, NJ; sisters, Lida Raum, and husband, Eddie, of Wilkesboro, NC, Sandra Cossaboon, and husband, Eddie, of Delmont, NJ, Ethel Campbell, and husband, Charles, of Atlantic City, NJ, Susan Endicott of Hesstown, NJ and Lena Solomon, and husband, Wayne, of Dorothy, NJ.
Funeral services for Cindy Elaine Lee will be conducted on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Carver and Rev. Brad Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the First Baptist Church Newland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 noon Saturday until the service hour at the funeral home.
