Michael Joseph Phillips, D. June 29, 2013
Michael Joseph Phillips, 63, of Newland passed away on June 29, 2013 at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born April 2, 1950 a son of the late Edward and Helen Brewer Phillips.
He was an architect.
Along with his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his: brothers, Bruce and Keith; niece, Shannon; and nephew, David.
Michael is survived by his sister, Vanessa Barrier, and her husband, Roger, of Newland; nephew, Edward Barrier of Newland; niece, Shelby Barrier of Newland; great niece, Briahna Barrier.
Services for Michael Joseph Phillips will be conducted on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Wise officiating.
The family respectfully requests no flowers, and that contributions be made to help with final expenses.
Ethel Alberta Winters, D. June 29, 2013
Ethel Alberta Winters ,age 88, of Elk Park passed away on June 29, 2013 at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk.
A native of Avery County, she was born April 22, 1925 a daughter of the late Henry Laws and Maggie Keller Laws.
She a member of the Heaton Christian Church and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by her family.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her: husband, Onard Grover Winters; sisters, Edith Odom, Opal Stout; brothers, Estel Laws, Gene Laws, George Laws, and William “Deck” Laws.
Ethel has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Calvin Winters, and his wife, Carol, of Elk Park, Dennis Winters, and his wife, Celia, of Shallotte, NC; sister, Virgie Smith of Roan Mountain, TN; brothers, Delmer Laws, and his wife, Sue, of Elk Park, Millard Laws, and his wife, Wanda, of Elizabethton, TN; sister in law, Mary Lou Laws of Elizabethton, TN; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Ethel Alberta Winters will be conducted on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. from the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Cole officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Taylor’s Chapel Cemetery.
