Grandin Carlton Ford (Nov. 9, 1912 – Jan. 5, 2015)

Grandin Carlton Ford, 102, of Newland, passed away on Jan. 5, 2015 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 9, 1912 a son of the late Nineva N.and Rosa Greer Ford.

Grandin was a Petty Officer 3rd Class in the US Navy and was the oldest living WWII Vet and Grand Marshall for the 100th Anniversary of Avery County.

He was retired from the Blue Ridge Parkway Maintenance Department.

Along with his parents, Grandin was preceded in death by his: wife, Gladys Benfield Ford; six brothers; and two sisters.

Grandin has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Kathie Ford and her fiance Rufus Biddix; sister, Eloise Ward; brothers, Tatum Ford and wife Lillian, David Ford and wife Fay, Wilburn Ford, Junior Ford; sisters, Clara Watson, Zelma Rader, Agnes Shores and husband Edward; sister-in-law, Joann Hubbard and husband Jimmy; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Grandin Carlton Ford will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 at 8 p.m. at the Grandfather Chapel with Nick Daniels, Don Ford and Bill Ford officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 9 at 12:15 p.m. to go in procession to the Newland Cemetery for interment services. Pallbearers will be: Roger Wise, Phillip Fisher, Phillip Odom, Micah Loven, Dickie Jarrett, Joe Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be: Darrell Brewer, Jimmy Hubbard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Newland Christian Church at 2800 Millers Gap Hwy. Newland, NC 28657.

Gertrude Warren (Sept. 9, 1941 – Jan. 4, 2015)

Gertrude Warren, 73, of Newland, passed away on Jan. 4, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville, following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 9, 1941 in Mannheim, Germany a daughter of the late Adam and Hennie Frieda Bauer. She was a loving wife, mother and friend who will be deeply missed by all.

Gertrude was also preceded in death by her: husband, Henry Walter Warren, Sr. and a son, Henry Walter Warren, Jr. and several brothers and sisters in Germany.

Left to cherish her memory her: sons, Johnny Warren and wife Lynn of Killeen, Tex., Douglas Warren of the home; grandchildren, Misty Warren and husband Joe Penland of the home, Adam Warren Banner Elk, Kyle Warren and wife Destiny of Pineola, Makayla Warren of Elk Park; great grandchildren, J’leigh Penland, Emily Penland, Skyelar Porter; sister, Theresa Grunewald of Germany.

Funeral services for Gertrude Warren will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the Frank Community. Interment will follow in the Whitaker Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour at the church.

Charles D. Ellis (Aug. 3, 1930 – Jan. 3, 2015)

Charles D. Ellis, 84, of Elk Park passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2015 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, Tenn.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Wilma Ellis of Elk Park; sons, David (Treka) Ellis, Michael (Sharon) Ellis and daughter Ginger (Mike)Hiser; grandsons, Jordan (Jenn), David (Brittany) and Daniel Ellis; granddaughters, Ashly (Brandon) Thompson and Amy Ellis; brothers, Frank (Betty) Ellis, Lester (Glenda) Ellis; sisters, Clara Jean (Walter) Heaton, Martha (Bill) Young, Lessie Turbyfill; numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles, a retired truck driver, loved spending time with his family and was loved by many. Charles was also a lifetime member of the Free Masons.

Charles was born Aug. 3, 1930 to David and Mae Ellis of Shell Creek, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. at the Elk Park Christian Church on Monday Jan. 5, 2015. Interment will follow in the Perry Cemetery on Shell Creek, Tenn.
