Curtis ‘Spot’ Ward, D. Jan. 7, 2014
Curtis “Spot” Ward, 58, of Minneapolis, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at his residence.
He was a son of the late Ira and Ester Ollis Ward.
Spot leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Joanne Buchanan Ward; daughters, Beth Wright, and her husband, Eric, Lindsey Harris, and her husband, Allen; brother, Kenny Ward, and his wife, Debbie; sisters, Lucy Avery, Lois Winters, and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Carson and Justin Wright, father and mother in law, Buddy and Louise Buchanan.
The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657 or to the Seby Jones Cancer Center.
Albert Lester Hughes, D. Jan. 7, 2014
Lester Hughes, 88, of 582 Jerry’s Creek Rd., Newland, NC passed away on Monday, January 7, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Avery County on April 22, 1924, a son of the late Hobert and Zona Hughes.
Mr. Hughes was a United States Marine Corp Veteran having served at Iwo Jima during World War II. He was an active member of Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his loving wife, Evelyn Hughes; son, Cole W. Hughes; daughters, Christina Buchanan and Kimberly Isner; sisters, Jean Oaks, Alice Hughes, Mildred Stafford, Kathy Hoilman;
Phyllis ‘Fid’ Wampler, D. Dec. 31, 2013
Phyllis “Fid” Wampler, 88, of Newland, NC, the Land Harbor Community, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at her residence.
A native of Howe, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Thurman and Pauline Routsong Shuman.
She graduated from the Lima High School in Howe, IN, and received her BS in Education from Ball State University in Muncie, IN.
Having played the violin since she was 11,she played as a member of the South Bend Symphony for 36 years. She was an avid golfer, having started to play at the age of 4, she won the Women’s 18 Hole Championship at the Elbel Golf Course in South Bend a few times.
Fid retired from Teaching Music, having taught instrumental music in the South Bend Public School System for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband, William Wampler; son, John Wampler and his wife, Rosemary, and daughter, Linda Miller, and her husband, Dale; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Friday, January 3 at 4:00 p.m. at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Capt. Howard Bramhall, D. Dec. 29, 2013
Howard Wellington Bramhall, son of Judge Howard W. Bramhall and Margaret Townsend Bramhall of Georgetown, Delaware passed away on December 29, 2013.
He was a river pilot on the Delaware River for a total of 36 years. He was a member of the Banner Elk Christian Fellowship and was an avid tennis player, fisherman, and loved to travel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Roberta Bramhall; brothers, George and Eben; children, David, Howard, Robin and Beverly; ten grandchildren.
Services for Howard Bramhall will be conducted in the early Spring of 2014 at the Banner Elk Christian Fellowship with Pastor Carl Clawson officiating.
