Mary K Hughes (D. Jan. 31, 2015)
We celebrate the life of Mary Kathleen Briggs Hughes, 91, who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Newport News, Va. Formerly of Newland, Mary had resided in Virginia since 2002. She was a native of Shell Creek, Tenn. and the daughter of David W. and Flossie Franklin Briggs.
Mary was the family matriarch and cherished each and every opportunity to spend time with her loved ones. She was married to a WWII veteran and after the war ended, they moved across several states while raising their family. Over her lifetime, she was employed by the Gloucester Men’s Shop in Gloucester, Va, the Crossnore Hospital cafeteria, and TRW of Newland. After retirement, Mary volunteered in area civic organizations. She loved to read and on any sunny day she would be found working in her flower gardens surrounding the family home. She had many friends that loved her and she will greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John French Hughes and brothers Harold Briggs and Robert “Bob” Briggs. Mary is survived by sons John F. Hughes Jr. and wife Linda, of Duck, Jason Hughes of Kent’s Store, Va.; daughters Rebecca Garrett and husband Peter, of Gloucester, Va., Carol Jackson and husband Leroy, of Williamsburg, Va.; granddaughter Heidi Hughes and husband Danny Clark, of Cleveland, Tenn.; brothers JD Briggs and wife Susan, of Bena, Va., and Carl Briggs and wife Alma, of Plant City, Fla.. In addition, Mary is survived by six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 7 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral home in Newland, with funeral services and internment to be held graveside at 2:00pm at Hughes Cemetery in Hughes.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Mary’s dedicated caregiver, Annie Carmine, and to the entire staff of The Gardens at Warwick Estates of Newport News, Va., with special appreciation to Sara Bowers and Apryl Wolford, for their wonderful care of our Mother and Grandmother.
James Frank Berry (Aug. 8, 1940 – Jan. 31, 2015)
Frank Berry, 74, of Banner Elk, passed away on Jan. 31, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 8, 1940 in Watauga County, a son of the late Stewart and Mildred Mann Berry.
Along with his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Smith Berry.
Frank has left to cherish his memory his: son, Gregory “Gregg” Berry and wife Jennifer of Banner Elk; grandsons, Cameron Berry and Connor Berry both of Banner Elk; brother, Bill Berry and wife Margaret of Banner Elk; sisters, Louise Thompson and husband Gordon of Lenoir, Ruth Campbell and husband Don of Land Harbor, Phyllis Craig and husband Jerry of Boone, Layne Davis and husband Kenny, Nancy Whitman and husband Brian of Arden.
Funeral services for Frank Berry will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Will Smith Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.
