Cora Louise Pittman, D. Feb. 22, 2013
Cora Louise Pittman, 88, of Newland, passed away on February 22, 2013 in Roan Mountain, TN.
A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Ella Fair Singleton. She was retired from Glen Raven in Newland and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonzo Hughes and Stewart Pittman; brothers, Robert, Enlow, Earl, and Ray Singleton; sisters, Hazel Greene, Bessie Carpenter, Mary Wright, Edith Love, Mildred.
She leaves behind her step children, Dianne Lunsford and her husband, Kenny, of Heaton, Charles Pritchard and his wife, Anita, of Frank; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Cora Lousie Pittman will be held on Sunday, February 24, at 7:00 pm in the Grandfather Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Lance officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Slippery Hill Cemetery.
Abel Bryson Buchanan, D. Feb. 20, 2013
Abel Bryson Buchanan, infant son of Nathaniel Buchanan and Brandy McKinney of Newland, passed away on February 20, 2013 at the Watauga Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Wayne and Ginger Buchanan of Elk Park; maternal grandparents, Terry and Gina McKinney of Newland; great grandparents: Richard and Wanda Clark of Elk Park, Johnny and Deborah Buchanan of Elk Park, Alice Rose of Elk Park, Gene and Evelyn Potter of Newland and Wayne and Anna McKinney of Bakersville.
Services will be private.

Louis S. Penland Sr., D. Feb. 19, 2013
Louis Saunders Penland, age 92, of Linville Falls passed away on February 19, 2013 at Jonas Ridge Assisted Living.
A native of Avery County, he was born February 8, 1921 a son of the late Arnold and Anna Burleson Penland.
He was a carpenter and enjoyed building and making things and loved working with tools. Louis enjoyed gardening and was very proud of his ribbon winning vegetables.
Louis was a member of North Cove Church of God.
Along with his parents, Louis was preceded in death by his: two wives, Sylvia Wise Penland, Nellie Grindstaff Penland; son, Gene Martin Penland; 11 siblings.
Louis has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Joyce E. Durrance of Palmetto, FL.; sons, Ed Penland and wife Joyce of Lakeland, FL., Louis S. Penland, Jr. and wife Dawn; sister, Marion Lee Dunigan of High Point, NC; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Louis Saunders Penland will be conducted on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Howard Riddle and Rev. Joshua Earl officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
