Sally Ann Burleson, 76, of Newland passed away on Feb. 10, 2015, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 26, 1938 in Madison County, NC a daughter of the late Perl “P.W.” Wade and Effie Townsend Payne.

Sally was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and enjoyed doing crafts and gardening.

Along with her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her: husband, Hanford Sanford Burleson; brothers, Charles R. Paul and Gary L. Payne.

Sally has left to cherish her memory her: sisters, Virginia Hafkemeyer and husband George of Tuscon, Ariz., Betty Williams and husband Dean of Limestone, Tenn., Zola Idol and husband Joe of Deep Gap, Doris Owenby of Knoxville, TN.; brothers, Earl Payne and wife Mary of Brevard, James Payne and wife Doris of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Sally Ann Burleson will be conducted on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ with Pastor Dave Atkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Jerry idol, Richard Small, Sam Erwin, Jason Brooks, Joe Tounzen and Andrew Caldwell. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour at the church.

Jack Michael Pentes, Jr. (D. Feb. 7, 2015)

A talented, driven, generous man, Jack was an inspiration to generations of artists and children around the world. Designer of the Land of Oz theme park in Beech Mountain, NC, and creator of the ‘soft play’ playground concept, Jack lived a life full of fun and creativity.

Jack is survived by his wife, Ruth Emerson Jones Pentes of Charlotte, daughter Danna Pentes and her partner Charlene Owen of Decatur, GA, son Dorne Michael Pentes and his spouse Wendy Fishman and grandchildren Elias Michael and Eden Blue Pentes, all of Charlotte, and his dog, Nellie.

A celebration of Jack’s life and work will be held this Friday, Feb. 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte, 234 North Sharon Amity Road, at 2 p.m. Reception to follow.

Johnnie S. Berry (April 1, 1935 – Feb. 5, 2015)

Mrs. Johnnie Sue Berry, 79, of Berry Road, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015.

She was born in Caldwell County April 1, 1935. She was retired from retail sales and was a member of Foscoe Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by the following; her first husband Billy Davis, her second husband Clyde Mulls, and her third husband Clarence. A son and daughter, Richard Allan Davis and Tina Arnette Mull, grandsons, Richard Allan Davis, Jr., Christopher Sevink and Michael Wade Taylor, Jr.

Survivors include a son, Clyde Mull, Jr. of Lenoir, daughters, Linda Darlene Mull and Martha Sue Watson both of Lenoir and Karan Mashell Callaway of Foscoe. 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial Services will be private and at a later date.

The family requests no food or flowers. Memorials may be made to Foscoe Christian Church, 8834 Hwy. 105 S. Boone, N.C. 28607.

Nina Greene Case (Jan. 3, 1947 – Feb. 4, 2015)

Nina Greene Case, 68, of Newland, passed away on Feb. 4, 2015 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.

A native of Avery County, she was born Jan. 3, 1947.

She was a member of First Baptist Church Newland and enjoyed fishing and traveling, especially to Montana with her friends.

Nina was the first female to be deputized in Avery County when she started working for the Avery County Sheriffs Office in 1971. She continued to work there for the majority of her career until her retirement in 2006. During her time at the Sheriffs Office she served as Deputy, Chief Jailer and Administrative Assistant.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Lemuel Greene, Sr.

Nina was all about family and adored her grandchildren. She will live on through the love and bond of her family. She has left to cherish her memory: her mother and step-father, Vivian Hartley Greene Erickson and Carl of the Ingalls Community; her daughter, Shannon Lane and husband Kevin of Newland; son, Kelly Case and wife Barbara of Newland; grandsons, Luke Ollis, Brandon Case, Bryant Lane all of Newland; granddaughter, Carly Case of Newland; great grandchildren, Tyler Ollis, Jace Ollis; sisters, Molly Holden and husband Wayne, Martha Hill, Amy Brown and husband Dennis all of Newland; brothers, Thomas Greene and wife Linette of Winston-Salem, Johnny Greene and special friend Carrie Stewart of Spruce Pine.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church Newland with funeral services to be conducted at 1:00 pm with Dr. Bill Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery.
