Charles B. Smith,age 79, of Land Harbor passed away on December 1, 2013 at his residence. 

He was born October 3, 1934 in Knoxville, TN a son of the late Edgar Lee and Edith Crews Smith. Charles was a member of the Mountainside Luthern Church in Linville NC and enjoyed fishing, racing and going to auctions. 

Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his: brother, Johnny Smith; sisters, Myra Chandler and Norma Jean Smith; an infant brother and a great grandchild. 

A well liked man and handy man who could do many things, Charles has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Angie Smith of the home; children, Teresa Beaudoin of Sylvia, NC, Melinda Smith of Newport News, VA, Beverly Setzer of Newton, NC, Lisa Friend McCoy and husband Randall of Hickory, NC, Doug Smith of Newton, NC, Carrie Christy and husband Adam of Taylorsville, NC, Callie Smith of Taylors, SC; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Charles Burton Smith will be conducted on Thursday, December 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Mountainside Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Quakenboss officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services. There will also be a service on Friday, December 6th at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC with interment to follow in the Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. June Buchanan Lecka, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013. 

She is survived by her husband, Charles Todd Lecka of the home; two sons, Michael Lecka of Fayetteville and Steve Lecka of Newland; two grandsons, Charlie Lecka and Chad Lecka both of Newland; four nieces, Judy Shelton of Johnson City, Tenn., Janice Stevens of Lynchburg, Va., Donna Clayton of Fayetteville and Kathryn “Cub” Clayton of Holly Springs; and nephew, Don S. Clayton of Roxboro. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday December 4, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Newland, NC. Interment will follow at Newland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:45 pm prior to service.

Mr. Tommy Lee Marcus age 65 of Linville passed away on Tuesday, November 26th. 
Graveside services will be on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in the Tanglewood Cemetery.

David Lee Franklin, age 72, of Newland went to be with the Lord on November 25, 2013. 

A native of Jonas Ridge, he was born November 8, 1941 a son of the late Mr.and Mrs. Gromer Franklin. 

Lee enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to church and spending time with is family. He was a deacon and song leader of Jonas Ridge Baptist Church. 

Along with his parents, Lee was preceded in death by a brother, William Franklin of Jonas Ridge. 

Lee has left to cherish his memory: wife, Emma Franklin of 53 years; daughter, Lee Ann Freeman and son-in-law Dean Freeman of Jonas Ridge; grandson and best friend Zachary Freeman; brothers, Ray Franklin of Marion and Jack Franklin of Morganton; sister and brother in law, Eula and Danny Harrison of Jonas Ridge, sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Steve Swint of Georgia; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Barbara Franklin of Jonas Ridge; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Sabo Franklin of Newland; brother and sister-in-law, Omer and Paula Franklin of Morganton; sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Kenny Carver; sister-in-law Edna Franklin of Jonas Ridge; many nieces, nephews and special friends and best buddy Sam, his Miniature Dashund of the home. 

Funeral services for Lee Franklin will be conducted on Friday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Jude Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. Graveside services will be Saturday November 30th at 12:00 p.m. at the Jonas Ridge Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Mitchell County Hospice.
