Brooksy Emma Young, 92, of Newland, passed away on Dec. 21, 2014 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine.

A native of Avery County, she was born Dec. 18, 1922 a daughter of the late Decatur and Joda Burleson Buchanan.

She was a member of Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church where she was very active in all of the activities of the church including singing in the Choir and was faithful to send cards and food to the sick and shut ins. Brooksy enjoyed gardening and canning.

She retired from Armoured Garments in Marion and during WWII she worked at Lockheed Martin in Baltimore, Md. where they supplied military equipment.

Along with her parents, Brooksy was preceded in death by her: husband, Howard D. Young; brothers, Robert Buchanan, Moil Buchanan; sister, Trusty Hughes; one grandson.

Brooksy has left to cherish her memory her: children, Darlene Johnson and husband Larry of Newland, Janet Young Asbury and husband Mel of Greensboro, Faron Young of Statesville; brothers, Franklin Buchanan and wife Alveda of Newland, Coy Buchanan of Newland; sisters, Trula Hughes of Newland, Joyce Catron of West Virginia; grandson, Kedrick Fanning and friend Lindsey of Tampa, Fla., Jordan Cox and wife Brandy of Newland; great granddaughter, Jadeyn Cox; great grandson Aiden Fanning; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Brooksy Young will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Troy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Hughes Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour. Pallbearers will be: Dan Hughes, Bob King, R.C. Hughes, T. L. Singleton, Gary Buchanan, and Jordan Cox.

Frederick G. Herbst (Sept. 3, 1931 – Dec. 18, 2014)

Frederick G. Herbst, 83, of Tatertown Road in Newland, the Spear community, and also of Blossvale, N.Y., died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014.

Frederick was born on Sept. 3, 1931, in Rome, N.Y., and was the son of the late Frederick F. and Gladys McDonald Herbst. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by other family members including Rob Shook, Carroll Stamey, Bobbie Shook and the Rev. Harold Dellinger.

Frederick was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Amphion during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the St. Lucien Catholic Church, and St. John’s/St. Mary’s Catholic Church of North Bay, New York, a member of American Legion Post No. 1309 of Taberg, N.Y., and was a past member of the McConnellsville Fire and Ambulance Squad.

Left to cherish Frederick’s memories are his wife 60 years; whom he married on Feb. 13, 1954; Betty Shook Herbst of the Spear community in Newland; his children; Frederick C. Herbst and wife, Rita of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; Mary Lappin and husband, Patrick of Cicero, N.Y.; Pamela Arzberger and husband, Steve of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; Stephen Herbst and wife, Wendy of Blossvale, N.Y.; and Tom Herbst of Newland; his brother; John ‘Moe’ Herbst of Rome, N.Y.; his grandchildren; Jessica and Brian Petranchuk, John Lappin, Meaghan and Eric Arzberger, Megan and Jay Henry, Justin and Lindsay Arzberger, Brian Williams, Caleb Herbst, Emily Herbst, Sara Herbst, Hannah Herbst, Tyler Herbst; his great grandchild; Clara Elizabeth Petranchuk. He also leaves behind his loving family of Jack and Josie Shook, Harry and Frances Shook, Barbara and Jason Buchanan, Florence Dellinger, Alice Stamey and all of their children and grandchildren.

The family respectfully requested the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Mr. Frederick Herbst on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at 9 a.m. at St. Lucien Catholic Church with Father Christopher Gober officiating. Interment followed in Yellow Mountain Cemetery. A time to receive friends and share memories and support the family was from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Otha Brown Hughes, 81, of the Roaring Creek Community, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Sid and Verna English Hughes. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother and three other brothers: Johnny, Rathie and JD Hughes. Otha enjoyed gardening, pulling galaxy, working in shrubbery and spending time with his friends and family.

Surviving are his sisters: Sandra Hughes and husband, Doug, of Roaring Creek, Helen Banner of Newland and Janice Bailey and husband, Joe, of Marion; brothers: Leonard Hughes and wife, Josie, of Roaring Creek and Earl Hughes and companion, Pat Townsend, also of Roaring Creek. A host of nieces and nephews who loved him very much also survive.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, in the Peoples Church. The Rev. Chris Nance and the Rev. Daniel Nance officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Upper Hughes Cemetery.

Curtiss “Curt” Leonard Clark, 83, of Newland, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, in Sebastian, Fla., surrounded by his wife and children.

A native of Avery County, he was born Nov. 9, 1931, a son of the late Myron Leonard Clark and Hattie Victoria Townsend Clark. He was a graduate of Newland High School, and a veteran of the US Army. He spent many years doing construction work and building. In his later years he was passionate about his work and even the small fixer-uppers around his home were done with pride. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, listening to bluegrass music, gardening and canning with family by his side. He loved taking his babies for a ride on the gator or golf cart. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a man who loved his family and friends unconditionally. His time on earth with us was a Blessing and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

Curt is survived by his wife of 59 years; Ruby Jean Harmon Clark of the home; his sons Leonard Clark and wife Susan of Three Mile, Mike Clark and wife Michelle of Newland; and daughter Debbie Smith and husband Chuck of Newland; brother Arthur Clark of Newland; sisters Coralee Cook of Coos Bay, Ore., and Dorothy Bare of Dobson; nine grandchildren, Christina Smith Carver, Mandy Smith Large, Stacy Clark, Byron Clark, Kendra Clark Hughes, Jessica Clark, Josh Clark, David Clark and Charlie Bounds; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Curt was preceded in death by his daughter, Daisy Dickson, son, Wyle Keith Clark, sisters, Daisy Snipes and Oma Lea Yates, and brother, Ira Clark.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at Altamont United Methodist Church, Outreach Center and the family will gather with friends afterwards.
