Albert Lee Jaynes (January 22, 1941 – August 3, 2014)
Albert Lee Jaynes, 73, of Newland passed away on August 3, 2014 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A native of Avery County, he was born January 22, 1941, a son of the late Lloyd Albert Jaynes and Elizabeth Ann Townsend Jaynes. He owned and operated Jaynes Plumbing Service from 1967 – 2013.
Albert was a beloved member of his community, who loved his family and enjoyed hunting, gardening, and inventing. His strong work ethic will carry on thru his family and friends. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the High Country Sportsman Club and attended the Crossnore Baptist Church and the Curtis Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Albert has left to cherish his memory his loving wife of fifty four years, Julia Aldridge Jaynes; son, Lloyd Ray Jaynes, and his wife, Valerie, of Newland, sister, Martha Hicks, and her husband, Wade, of Heaton; brother, Roy Jaynes, and his wife, Diane, of Newland; only granddaughter, Lauren Jaynes Turbyfill, and her husband, Casey, of Newland; nephews, Phillip Hicks, Rev. Jeffery Jaynes, Jerry Jaynes; niece, Stacie Stewart.
Services for Albert Lee Jaynes will be held on Thursday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m. at the Crossnore First Baptist Church. The Revs. Lander Heafner, Ron Greene, and Rick Birchfield will officiate. Music will be under the direction of the Rev. Jeffery Jaynes. There will be a special time of comments from friends and family.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until the service hour Thursday evening at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Curtis Creek Freewill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund, 74 Hicks-Buchanan Lane, Elk Park, NC 28622.

Ruby Townsend (February 12, 1929 – August 2, 2014)
Ruby Townsend, 85, formerly of Avery County, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Roan Highlands Nursing Home in Roan Mountain, TN.
Born in Avery County on February 12, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Gurney and Allie Arnett Townsend. She was the wife of 49 years of the late Ralph William Townsend who passed away in 2000.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sisters Margaret Townsend, and Edna Calloway; a brother Arnel Townsend; niece Karen Collins; and nephew Clayton Arnett. Ruby Townsend retired in 2000, after working for 43 years at Banner Elk Elementary School, in the cafeteria where she was known as “Miss Ruby”. She had many hobbies such as cooking, gardening, reading, but what she loved the most was spending time with family and friends. She was an avid member of the Seventh day Adventist church in Banner Elk, NC. Mrs. Ruby Townsend is survived by her daughter; Linda Gouge, and husband, Dayton of Elizabethton, TN; a grandson, Matthew Gouge, and wife, Wendy of Banner Elk, NC; a step granddaughter, Brandie Caraway, and husband, John of Roan Mountain, TN; three great grandchildren; Gavin Gouge and Gracie Gouge of Banner Elk, NC, and Levi Caraway of Roan Mountain, TN; and several nieces, and nephews who will miss her.
The funeral services for Mrs. Townsend will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Monday, August 4, 2014 at the chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Heisey officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Townsend Cemetery at 11:00am. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 5:00 ~ 7:00 pm until the service hour at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Jerome E. La Baw Sr. (June 23, 1928 – July 29, 2014)
Jerome E. “Jerry” La Baw, Sr., 86, of Linville Land Harbor and Florida, passed away on July 29, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Hollywood, Florida, he was born June 23, 1928 a son of the late William Benjamin and Nellie Edna Stormer La Baw.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a Lt. JG. He retired as an Electrical Engineer. He was a member of the Newland United Methodist Church.
Along with his parents, Jerome was preceded in death by his loving wife, Greta Simmons La Baw in 2011 and a brother, Willis La Baw.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Sandra La Baw, and her spouse, Susan Manson, of Cedar Rapids, IA; sons, Jerry E. La Baw, Jr., of Marion, IA, Scott La Baw, and his wife, Phyllis, of Temple Terrace, FL; grandchildren, Nicole La Baw, Carson La Baw; brother, Richard La Baw.
Jerry will be interred in the Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow, Florida.
