Gerald Smith, 64, of Banner Elk passed away on April 26, 2014 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born June 28, 1949, a son of the late Kermit George Smith and the late Lola Frost Shomaker Smith.

He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church and worked for many years as a Carpenter and Landscaper.

Gerald was a loving husband, great dad and best friend to his son, he loved his grandchildren and was a kind hearted man who would was always there to help a friend, neighbor or family member.

He has left to cherish his memory, his wife, Cindy Smith of the home; son, Brian Smith, and his wife, Lisa, of Pineola; grandchildren, Ashley Smith of Pineola, Dustin Smith of Pineola; sisters, Sylvia Krombel, and her husband, John, of Banner Elk, Euleta Barrier, and her husband Allan, of Drexel; brother, Ivan Smith of Ashe County; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Gerald Smith will be conducted on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Ingham officiating. The family will gather with friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Family, friends, and pallbearers will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday at Noon to go in procession to the Michael Cemetery in Banner Elk.

Magnolia Mathes Jackson, age 79, of Banner Elk passed away on April 23, 2014 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born April 8, 1935 a daughter of the late Joe and Frances Shade Mathes.

She worked for many years at American Thread and was the Secretary of the Community Methodist Church.

Magnolia enjoyed quilting and listening to Christian Gospel Music.

Along with her parents, Magnolia was preceded in death by her: husband, Johnnie Jackson; brothers, Montie Mathes, Bill Mathes, Ural Mathes; sister, Katie Avery.

Magnolia has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Roger Jackson of Plumtree, NC., Steve Jackson of Rutherfordton, NC.; daughter, Charlene Phillips of Hendersonville, NC.; sister, Louise Jackson of Plumtree, NC.; brother, Marion Mathes of Philadelphia, PA.; seven grandchildren, Darrell Jackson, Reggie Jackson, Brian Jackson, Kellen Jackson, Anthony Whittington, Walter Henson, Jr., Jake Henson; 3 great grandchildren, Kellen Ty Jackson, Kylie Jackson, Steven Thomas Whittington.

Homegoing services for Magnolia Mathes Jackson will be conducted on Sunday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Mathes and Pastor Wallace Wise officiating. Interment will follow in the Conley Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the church.
