Edgar Edwards,age 86, of Crossnore passed away on April 19, 2014 at Cannon Memorial Hospital. 

A native of Yancey County, he was born February 25, 1928 a son of the late Amos and Belvie Byrd Edwards. 

A devout servant of his Lord and Savior, Edgar was a member and Deacon of Crossnore First Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent for many years. Mr. Edwards served as Chairman of the Avery County Commissioners for several years and also served on the local Draft Board. He was a charter member of the Crossnore Volunteer Fire Department. 

He worked as a Barber in Crossnore for over 40 years. Mr. Edwards enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren and wife, especially spending time fishing in Montana. 
Along with his parents, Edgar was preceded in death by his: sister, Anna Lee English; brothers, Lester, Kiah, Lemmie, Theo, and Clyde Edwards. 

A loving husband, father and paw, Edgar has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 64 years, Lois Watson Edwards; sons, Terry and Debra Edwards of Crossnore, Gary and Patricia Edwards of Elk Park, Randy and Margaret Edwards of Vilas; brother, Homer Edwards of Marshall; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. 

Services for Edgar Edwards will be conducted on. Monday, April 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.at the Crossnore First Baptist Church, with his nephew, Marine Chaplain Ted Edwards and Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Monday at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657.

Russ Johnson, age 75, of Newland passed away on April 18, 2014 at his residence.. 

A native of Avery County, he was born January 1, 1939 a son of the late Shoner Kyle and Murrell Hope Meredith Johnson. 

He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. 

Russ was a truck driver and retired in 1985 from Roadway Express. 

He enjoyed truck driving, cooking and selling produce. 

Along with his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his: brothers, Abe Johnson, Guy Johnson; son, Joe Johnson; first wife, Glenda Trivett, and great granddaughter, Rayna Angel. 

Russ has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Jackie Johnson of the home; children, Dax Maniette and fiance Bree Thompson of Elkin, NC., Deborah Riley and husband Pat of Sneedville, TN., David Johnson of Sneedville, TN,; grandchildren, Angie and husband Shane, Natasha, Katie, Kristie and husband Brian; breat grandchildren, Shayden, Chandler, McKeennley, Brady, Zayah, Zyler, Drew, Trinity; brothers, Kyle Johnson and wife Mary of Morganton, Dan Johnson of Nebo, NC.; sisters, Mona Clark of Newland, Marilyn Hoilman and husband Herman of Newland, Martha Aldridge and husband Mike of Newland, Amanda Keck and husband David of Denver, NC. 

Funeral services for Russ Johnson will be conducted on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Joe Ingham officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Wednesday April 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.to go in procession to the Trivett Cemetery for graveside services.

Marie Burleson Cuthbertson, age 92, of Crossnore passed away on April 17, 2014 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 20, 1921 a daughter of the late Keener Carlyle and Monarchy Jane Gaddy Burleson.

Marie was a member of Crossnore First Baptist Church and she was homemaker.

She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers, picture puzzles and bird watching.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her: husband, Samuel L. Cuthbertson, Sr.; son, Samuel Cuthbertson, Jr.; sisters, Signer, Gloria, Garnett, Eunice, Virginia.

A wonderful mother, grandmother and prayer warrior who was so loved by her family, Marie has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Susie Aldridge of Crossnore; son, Robert Burleson and wife Colleen of Massillion, OH.; daughter-in-law, Barbara Cuthbertson of Morganton, NC.; grandchildren, David Burleson, Monique Pressley, Holly Aldridge, Ashley Cuthbertson; great grandchildren, Michael, Davis, Elizabeth, Brenna, Maddie.

Funeral services for Marie Burleson Cuthbertson will be conducted on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Crossnore First Baptist Church with Rev. Lander Heafner officiating. Interment will follow in the Cuthbertson Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the church.
