Christina Gail Shook, D. April 14, 2014

Christina Gail Shook ,age 43, of Banner Elk passed away on April 14, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center. 

She was a graduate of Avery County High School and Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk. She worked as a Teacher at the Grandfather Academy in Banner Elk. 

Tina was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Freeman Shook, and her brother, Larry Shook. 

She has left to cherish her memory her, father, Larry B. Shook of Banner Elk; grandmother, Kathleen Shook of Banner Elk; sister in law, Karen Shook of Banner Elk; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and extended family and friends. 

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland.

Debra Jean Rupard, D. April 10, 2014

Debra Jean Rupard,age 58, of Banner Elk passed away on April 10, 2014 at her residence. 

She was born April 16, 1955 in Detroit, MI a daughter of the late Ben Hayden and Maude Lee Hodges Trivett. 

Debra was a member of White Rock Baptist Church and had worked at the Valle Crucis Conference Center for 35 years. 

She enjoyed taking care of her grandkids and celebrating her Savior. 

Along with her parents, Debra was preceded in death by her: sister, Benaline Hagie; brothers, Robert Trivett and Leroy Trivett. 

A very loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Debra has left to cherish her memory her: husband, Billy Rupard of the home; daughters, Deana Coleman and husband Terry of Newland, Mindy Hicks and husband Tony of Sugar Grove, NC; son, Charles Rupard and special friend Melissa Michael of Banner ELk; grandsons, Cody Minton of Miami, Fl., Jacob Hicks of Banner Elk, Anthony Hicks of Banner ELk; sisters, Joy Trivett and husband Hayden Hopson of Elk Park, Pat Adams and husband Ronnie of Mayfield, KY, Judy Hines of Nortonville, KY; special friend, Dale Townsend of Banner Elk; sister-in-law, Shirley Brown and husband Calvin Sharpe of Morganton; brother-in-law, Jerry Ruppard and wife Ollie of Banner Elk. 

Funeral services for Debra Jean Rupard will be conducted on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Lynn Shook officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.in the White Rock Cemetery

Grace Cooper Moseley, age 91, of Newland passed away on April 8, 2014 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, TN. 

A native of Avery County, she was born May 20, 1922 a daughter of the late William Chester and Martha Ellis Cooper. 

She graduated from Crossnore Business School and worked as a Secretary for the Department of Defense. 

Grace was a member of Newland Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxillary and the DAV Auxillary. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting and hooking rugs. 

Along with her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her: husband, Eldrege E. Moseley; son, John William Moseley. 

Grace has left to cherish her memory her: son, Tommy Moseley and fiance’ Betty Sue Wise of Newland; daughter-in-law, Jane Moseley of Cunningham, TN.; granddaughter, Michelle Moseley of Clarksville, TN.; grandsons, John William Moseley, Jr. of Nashville, TN., Mark Smith of Woodlawn, TN.; great grandchildren, Rylee and Jackie; great-great granddaughter, Sayde. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. 

Funeral services for Grace Cooper Moseley will be conducted on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 1:30 pm at the Newland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael McKee officiating. Interment will follow in the Ellis-Cooper Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 9th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home and will lie in state prior to the services beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: N.C. Alzheimer’s Foundation at 3800 Shamrock Dr. Charlotte, NC 28215 or to the American Cancer Society at 120 Executive Park Bldg 1 Asheville, NC 28801.

Bertram Carraway Jr., D. April 6, 2014

Bertram Reid Carraway Jr., age 64, of Jonas Ridge passed away on April 6, 2014. 

He was born March 7, 1950 in Dade County, Florida a son of Bertram Reid and Bette Joann Morton Carraway. 

Bertram was a Jet Engine Mechanic for the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam Era. 

He was a certified Harley Davidson Mechanic and enjoyed fishing, boating and bird hunting. 

A loving son, father and brother, Bertram has left to cherish his memory his: parents, Bertram Reid and Bette Carraway, Sr. of Charlotte; sons, Reid Carraway, III of Newland, Brandon Carraway of Jonas Ridge, Adam Carraway of Jonas Ridge; sisters, Coleen Marshall of Bel Air, MD., Kathy Bailey of Charlotte; brother Robert Craig Carraway of Charlotte. 

Services for Mr. Carraway will be private.

Joan Tallent Woody, age 81, of Banner Elk, NC, passed away on April 4, 2014 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. She was born March 14, 1933 in Jackson County, NC to Grover Cleveland and Mary Patterson Tallent, the second of four daughters. 
Along with her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Willard Woody and sister Doris Muse. 

She and her husband owned and operated a trout hatchery in Bryson City, NC. After retiring, they moved to Montana for several years before moving to Tuscaloosa, AL. Joan spent the last year in Banner Elk, NC. 

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Tuscaloosa, AL where she spent many wonderful and joyous hours with her beloved ladies group, Circle One. Joan loved to travel, and she especially loved sharing her baking skills with family and friends. She was an avid reader and always read The Smoky Mountain Times, no matter where she lived. 

Joan has left to cherish her memory two daughters, Vicki W. Foster of Banner Elk, NC, and Cynthia W. Duncan and husband Joe of Fosters, AL; sisters, Margaret Tallent of Bryson City, NC and Patsy Blackburn of San Angelo, TX; granddaughter Melissa Watters and husband Josh of McCalla, AL; grandsons, Garrett Greene and fiancé Darragh Gyger of Asheville, NC and Rick Duncan and wife Flavia of Dublin, OH; great-grandchildren, Samuel Wiggins, Nick Watters, Noah Watters, and Adrian Duncan. 

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church of Tuscaloosa, AL at 2:30 pm, Saturday, April 26, 2014 with Rev. Tom Goebel officiating. Her ashes will be scattered, as were her husband’s, in their beloved Montana and the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Tuscaloosa, 627 Paul W. Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 or to your favorite charity.
