Sept. 18, 2013. On Friday, Sept. 20, Appalachian State University’s Solar Decathlon: Europe Team “Team Reciprocite” will participate in a world-wide phenomenon called PARK(ing) day.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the team will reclaim an urban parking spot and transform it into an urban “green space” for a day.

imgresPARK(ing) day is an annual worldwide event in where where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. In past years, PARK(ing) day was celebrated in over 35 countries, involving more than 975 temporary green spaces being created.

The local team will be located at the corner of Howard and Depot Streets in downtown Boone, right beside Footsloggers.

“Footsloggers was very generous to give us two spots for the event,” said Mark Brides, communications manager of Team Reciprocite.

The team will be coordinating with the Watauga County Humane Society to bring out puppies to the temporary green space as well.

The dogs that are going will be ready for adoption but anyone interested will need to come out to the Adoption Center and fill out an application, said Gilda Gordon of the Watauga Humane Society. The pets will be excited to be socialized and happy to meet you.

“Part of the mission of PARK(ing) Day is to generate critical debate around improving the quality of the urban human habitat, which aligns with our mission of designing and developing a people-centric and environmentally-conscious neighborhood that displays all of the characteristics of a smarter urban community model,” Bridges said.
