Sept. 2, 2014. Appalachian State University will kick off the fall 2014 season of the annual Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series on Thursday, Sept. 4.
The first visiting writer of the academic year will be Allen St. John. St. John is Appalachian State University’s Common Reading Author and an award-winning journalist. His resume includes columns for the Wall Street Journal, pieces for the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Maxim, Salon, Popular Mechanics, Playboy, Men’s Journal and more.
His many accolades include honors from the North Jersey Press Club, the North American Ski Journalists Association and the United States Tennis Writers Association.
Allen St. John will present a reading on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. His presentation will be held in the Blue Ridge Ballroom in the Plemmons Student Union.
The Fall 2014 Visiting Writers Series is supported by Appalachian State University Foundation, Appalachian’s office of Academic Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English, the Common Reading Program, The University Bookstore, Belk Library and the Appalachian Journal, The Gideon Ridge Inn, the Red Onion Restaurant, John and the late Margie Idol, Paul and Judy Tobin, Alice Naylor, Thomas McLaughlin and the High Country Writers.
The Visiting Writers Series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank (class of 1968), 2013 Appalachian Alumni Association Outstanding Service Award recipient, past trustee and generous supporter of Appalachian State University.
