ASU To Host Open Forum in March To Meet Provost Finalist Candidates

In late March, Appalachian State University will host three provost candidates on campus. Candidates will meet with many individuals and groups during their two-day visits, and open public forums will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the first day of each interview.

In March, ASU Chancellor Sheri Everts announced that Lori Gonzalez was stepping down from this position and former Provost Stan Aeschleman agreed to serve on an interim basis until the search for a new provost concluded.

Darrell Kruger

Dr. Darrell Kruger currently serves as Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of New Orleans. With a Ph.D. in Geography from Louisiana State University, he joined the faculty in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Louisiana-Monroe in 1995, where he received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2001. He also served on the faculty of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Illinois State University from 2002-2013, where he received tenure and promotion to Associate and full Professor, and served as Interim Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and Associate Dean of the College of Education. Dr. Kruger was an American Council on Education Fellow in 2010-2011, with a residency at the University of Wisconsin.

Scott Furlong

Dr. Scott Furlong currently serves as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. With a Ph.D. in Political Science from The American University, Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1993, where he was tenured and promoted to Associate and full Professor. At UW-Green Bay, he has also served as chair of Political Science and chair of Public and Environmental Affairs, prior to becoming dean in 2007. His other administrative work at UW-Green Bay includes five years as Co-director of the FOCUS (first-year experience) Program and three years as Director of the Introduction to College Program. Dr. Furlong also completed the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education in 2010.

Karen Schmaling

Dr. Karen Schmaling is Professor of Psychology at Washington State University—Vancouver in Vancouver, Washington, where she served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 2010 to 2012. With a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington, she joined the Psychiatry faculty of the University of Colorado in 1988. In 1992, she began nineteen years at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington, where she earned tenure and served as Assistant, Associate, and full Professor, and served as Director of the Clinical Psychology Internship Program. Three years at the University of Texas at El Paso included service as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Interim Dean for the College of Health Sciences, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research. From 2004 to 2010, she was Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte.
