ASU Student Found Dead in Residence Hall Wednesday Identified, Foul Play Not Suspected, Few Details Released

April 24, 2013. Wednesday afternoon a student was found dead in White Residence Hall on the campus of ASU. 

A university spokesperson initially released this statement yesterday:

“An Appalachian State University student was found dead in a residence hall early this afternoon (April  24). The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Foul play is not suspected. The university is providing counseling to friends and others on campus affected by the student’s death.”

On Thursday afternoon, ASU officials identified her as Keegan Garratt, a 19-year-old freshman from Cary.

“The university continues to offer counseling to friends and others on campus affected by Garratt’s death. A memorial book will be available for signing at Plemmons Student Union on campus beginning Friday afternoon. The book will be sent to Garratt’s family as an expression of the university’s concern and care for them. Funeral arrangements for Garratt are incomplete,” according to a statement released Thursday.
