ASU Names Zeke Beam Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications

Zeke Beam has been named associate athletics director for strategic communications at Appalachian State University, announced by director of athletics Doug Gillin on Monday. This position has recently been elevated and the department of Sports Information has been renamed as Strategic Communications.

“We are extremely excited to have Zeke join the Mountaineer family,” said Gillin. “Zeke will oversee the Strategic Communications department, which will focus on the traditional sports information work, as well as, elevating the Appalachian State brand locally, regionally and nationally. Zeke’s varied background make him a great addition to our team as we continue to grow Appalachian State athletics.”

Beam will serve as the athletics department’s primary spokesperson and direct all communications for Appalachian State’s NCAA Division I athletics department and its 20 sports. Beam will serve as as the primary communications officer and media contact for the football program and will be a member of the department’s senior leadership team.

Prior to his arrival at Appalachian, Beam served as the assistant athletic director for media at Charleston Southern since the summer of 2012. While at CSU, Beam was responsible for all operations of the media relations office and served as the primary contact for as many as 11 sports, including football, men’s basketball, baseball, golf and track and field. He was the Big South Conference SID chairman from 2014-16.

He was involved in facility upgrades, including the design of the football field turf, design of basketball arena floor and significant improvements for television. Beam produced and designed a football gameday program, media guide and all printed marketing materials, while also overseeing a redesign of csusports.com which led to record web traffic and social media involvement.

Before his time at CSU, Beam served as the director of communications at Carson-Newman University for eight years, working as the “Voice of the Eagles” for football and basketball from 2004-12, but also producing Carson-Newman’s award-winning football media guide and game program.

Beam graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication arts, radio and TV from Carson-Newman in 2002. He followed that up with his M.B.A. in marketing and finance from the University of Tennessee in 2004.
