June 6, 2013. ASU’s annual Alumni Reunion Weekend occurs this Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8.  The Black & Gold Society, started by the McKinney Alumni Center, is recognizing the class of 1963, who graduated from ASU 50 years ago.

bgsocietylogo_smThe Black & Gold Society, founded two years ago, serves the special purpose of recognizing those who have graduated in 1963 and prior, and new inductees will receive a medallion.

“We have a reunion weekend every year, celebrating all alumni,” said Patrick Setzer, executive director of alumni affairs and annual giving. “We are encouraging the class members to think about a donation to the Appalachian Fund.”

The Appalachian Fund applies to all areas of the university, whether it be providing scholarships or making sure classrooms are able to provide students with an up-to-date environment.

Graduates from the class of 1963 and prior are invited to a complimentary reception on the patio of the McKinney Alumni Center. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages are available and former classmates can reconnect as Chancellor Peacock joins the induction. Attendees who were inducted last year are encouraged to wear their medallions proudly to this event.

After the induction, Central Dining Hall provides a casual dinner at 5:15 p.m., followed by a showing of the classic 1963 film Bye Bye Birdie at Greenbriar Theatre in the Plemmons Student Union at 7 p.m.

Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. guests are invited to attend the Rhododendron Society Induction Breakfast. The Rhododendron Society recognizes graduates of ASU who have served as teachers, librarians, human service professionals or administrators and have shown great reflection on themselves as well as the university. This year, the Rhododendron Society honors Ron Beane, Gail Lentz Ford and Dr. Garret Hinshaw.

Graduates from the class of 1963 and prior are invited to this event known as the Black & Gold Society Class Meetings. Light breakfast items are complimentary.

An Appalachian Family BBQ occurs Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for those who wish to come out to Sanford Mall to enjoy delicious BBQ and giveaways. Tickets are $15 for adults.

30 to 45 minute walking campus tours, led by ASU Student Ambassadors, will be given to learn and see updates of construction and new buildings on campus at 1 p.m. Tours start at the Sanford Mall. At 2 p.m., guests can receive a walking tour of the athletic complexes on campus. A representative from the Yosef Club will lead to tours to inform alumni of ASU’s 20 varsity teams.

To close out the day, the Alumni Awards Gala will honor the “Best of Appalachian”. This annual event recognizes the 2013 recipients of the Alumni Memorial Scholarships, Outstanding Service Award, Young Alumni Award and Distinguished Alumni Awards. Tickets are $50 and R.S.V.P is requested. The event occurs at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The Alumni Reunion Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for returning and new alumni to enjoy a weekend full of food, excitement, and tours of ASU’s campus.
