Oct. 29, 2012. The winter storm in the High Country today forced Avery County Schools to close. Watauga County Schools and Appalachian State University both operated on a regular schedule, but ASU recently announced they will be canceling evening classes for this evening.

Classes after 6 p.m. will not be held at ASU. Additionally, classes that begin before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, also have been cancelled. University officials are planning to announce by 7 a.m. tomorrow what the status will be for classes starting after 11 a.m.

Though WCS stuck it out today, the increasingly inclement weather in Watauga County could result in school closures tomorrow. WCS spokesman Marshall Ashcraft said they school system would continue to monitor the weather throughout the evening, but said based on the forecast he would be “pleasantly surprised” if they were able to make a call on school by tonight.

Ashcraft said, as per WCS policy, a decision to close school or not must be made prior to 6 a.m. tomorrow and that a decision would probably be announced around 6:15 a.m.

As for ACS, inclement weather already prevented them from having classes today. The schools operated on a optional teacher workday schedule with a two-hour delay this morning. A decision concerning the operation of school for Tuesday will be made after 5 p.m. today.
