Sept. 9, 2014. The Ashe County Arts Council invites art lovers to wander the streets of downtown West Jefferson Friday, Sept. 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for this month’s Gallery Crawl. Sixteen galleries will be open after hours to showcase the latest artwork of talented local and regional artists.
The Gallery Crawl is a free event and is sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council in cooperation with the West Jefferson Business Association, the West Jefferson Tourism Development Authority and is funded, in part, through a Grassroots Arts Program Grant of the North Carolina Arts Council.
This month’s Crawl is connected with the county’s seventh annual On the Same Page Literary Festival, taking place Sept. 16-20.
“There will be folks on the street reading poems for the crawl,” Rebecca Williams, program director for the Ashe County Arts Council, said. “It”sВ sort of a performance piece.”
Street readers include: Fran Cook, Maureen Dintino. Henry Doss and Scot Pope, Naomi Faw, Mickeal Goss, Annehart Herrick, Sandy and Dal Lassen, Suzanne Moore, Diana Renfro, Ramona Renfro and Gilly Macknee.
“These are all writers from Ashe county and Friends of the Library,” Williams said.
The Crawl will also coincide with the opening reception of Ashe County Arts Council’s newest exhibit, More Than Words.
“Visual artists have paired up with writers for this exhibit, which opens Friday” Williams said.
In this exhibit, visual artists create works and writers respond to them with a poem or short narrative.
The results are original works that, in turn, inspire other works of art. Each tries to relate to the other to the other by describing the essence of the other’s original art, Williams said.
This exhibit will be on display in the Arts Center through Oct. 4.
In addition to The Ashe County Arts Council gallery, 15 other galleries in downtown West Jefferson will participate in the Crawl.
“Each individual gallery always does something special for the gallery crawl,” Williams said.
Galleries will feature new exhibits, new artists and new works. For more information about the Crawl, the Literary Festival or Ashe County Arts, visit www.ashecountyarts.org or call 336-846-ARTS.
