Mrs. Virginia Ruth Johnson, age 77, of Conover, NC, formerly of Lansing, NC, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Mrs. Johnson was born on September 19, 1935 in Shady Valley, TN to the late Benjamin R. and Reba Hazel Moore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garland Ray Johnson, and a brother, Raymond Moore. Mrs. Johnson worked as an inspector for Jefferson Apparel. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover. She enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers, cooking and baking.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Dr. Ed Yount, Rev. Cris Alley, and Rev. Glenn Woodie. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by: Son, David Johnson and wife Linda of Conover; Daughter, Brenda Ellis and husband Eric of Wilkesboro; Sister, Joyce Brown of Green Springs Community, VA; Brother, Robert Moore of Bristol, TN; Brother, Carl Moore of Bristol, TN; Brother, Dean Moore of Bristol, VA; Grandson Brian Johnson and wife Tarin of East Providence, RI; also surviving are ten nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lucille Miller Osborne, age 78, of China Grove, NC died on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Liberty Commons in Salisbury, NC. Mrs. Osborne was born on March 17, 1934 in Ashe County, NC to the late Carl and Bessie Faircloth Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Bradley Osborne, a grandchild, Shad Sherrill, two sisters, Dorothy Parsons and Thelma Maye. Mrs. Osborne was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Frances Love Cox Troutman, better known as “Fran” age 84, of West Jefferson passed away Monday morning at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral services Mrs. Troutman will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00am at West Jefferson United Methodist Church with Rev. Peter Taylor officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service. Graveside service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30pm on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Boone Family Funeral Home.

Mrs. Troutman was born in Belmont, NC on August 5, 1928 to Paul Miller Cox and Daisy McCarn Cox. Mrs. Troutman is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Jackson Troutman, of West Jefferson; a brother, John Thomas Cox, of Raleigh, NC and her parents, Paul and Daisy Cox, of Raleigh, NC.

Mrs. Troutman reestablished Ashe County Girl Scouts in 1964 and served as Neighborhood chairman for 6 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and very active in their church and community. She attended North Carolina State University and was a member of the first co-ed cheerleading squad at NC State. Fran and Bob (her husband) met at Fairmont Methodist Church on the campus of NC State in the year of 1946 and later married in 1952. Fran and Bob founded West Jefferson Wood Products in 1964.

She is survived by one daughter, Kristina Love Troutman, of Charlotte, NC; one sons, Robert Bradley Troutman, of Clemmons; three grandsons, Adam, Taylor and Graham, all of Clemmons, NC; a sister-in-law, Margaret McNeill Cox, of Raleigh, NC; one niece; one nephew; several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Myrtle Rose Miller, age 95, of Laurel Springs, NC died on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson. Mrs. Miller was born on April 20, 1917 in Laurel Springs, NC to the late Fred and Hattie Sheets Rose. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Miller, two sons, Brice Miller and Wayne Miller, and a sister, Mable Sheets. She had worked at Cartex Cotton Mill in Salisbury.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Ed Hall. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Junior William Sutherland age 75, of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Sutherland was born March 16, 1937 in Ashe County, to James and Lou Ham Sutherland. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents and wife: Nell Sutherland.

Mrs. Bernice Dixon Blevins age 83, of West Jefferson, NC died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Mrs. Blevins was born on February 28, 1929 in Ashe County, to Walter Winfield and Maude Jones Dixon. Mrs. Blevins was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Penn, Kyle and Kent Dixon and sister, Evon Smithey. Mrs. Blevins loved bowling, photography and crocheting. She owned and laundromat inGalax. She was an active member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Keith Casey & Rev. Ken Furches. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Friday, prior to the service.

Mary C. Miller age 48 of West Jefferson died Friday at Watauga Medical Center. Miss. Miller was born in Ashe County on July 24, 1964 to Robert Ernest and the late Dora Ham Miller. She was preceded in death by her mother, two sisters, Shirley Miller, Judy Miller and brother Jimmy Miller. Mary faithfully attended Faith Fellowship. She enjoyed flower gardening. The family would like to thank Watauga Medical Center for their care during Mary’s stay in the hospital.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 28, 2013 at 11am at Faith Fellowship by Pastor Elliott Osowitt and Rev. Darryl Giles. Burial will follow in the Pennington Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:00am to 11:00am prior to the service at the church.

Ms. Miller is survived by: her fiancée: Brian Borelle of West Jefferson, one son: Nathan Osborne of West Jefferson, her father: Robert Ernest Miller of Lansing, two brothers: Robert Lee Miller & Doug Parsons both of Lansing, two sisters: Betty Roten of Wilkesboro and Dorothy Ham of Lansing, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

John Wayne “Greg” Carroll age 83, of Creston, NC died Friday, January 25, 2013 at his home. Mr. Carroll was born December 19, 1929 in Baltimore, MD to Upsher and Sally Carroll. Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Charlie & Upsher “Buddy” Carroll. He loved entertaining and working with ACTA, BROC and Riverview Lions Club. He was chairman of the Riverview Endowment. He sang with many groups including, The Four Buddies, The Orioles and The Ink Spots. He loved helping the community. He was a member of Creston United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Creston United Methodist Church by Rev. Rickey Mitchell. The family will receive friends following the service in the Creston United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Mr. Miller was born on August 26, 1942 in Ashe County, NC to William Worth and Aulsie Stidhams Miller. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Illene Miller and brother, Roy Earl Miller. Mr. Miller loved to coon and bobcat hunt. He enjoyed working with his farm animals and dogs. He was a generous and giving person and he loved spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in Pennington Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Bower Little age 99, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Mrs. Little was born May 10, 1913 in Jefferson, NC to George and Hattie Bare Bower. Mrs. Little was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mont Little, sister, Ann Smith and brothers, Paul and Pell Bower .

Mrs. Little graduated from West Jefferson High School and Appalachian State University. She taught school in Ashe County for 37 years. After her retirement in 1977 she became very active in the community. She was a volunteer and auxiliary member at Ashe Memorial Hospital for 24 years, chairman of the Heart Fund Mother’s March for 18 years, and served two terms as president of the Ashe County chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). Mrs. Little was a member of the Ashe County Women’s Club, the Adult Literacy League, and the Ashe County Teacher’s Association. She was the Ashe County Volunteer of the Year in 1995.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Friendship Baptist Church by Rev. Stephen Little and Rev. Russell Hart. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Little is survived by: Two sons: Ned Little and wife Ann of Austin, TX and, Steve Little and wife Dianne of Harrisonburg, VA, Two daughters: Monte DeBoard of Jefferson and Linda McQueen of Cornelia, GA, Brother: Kenneth Bower of West Jefferson, Three sisters: Audrey Hurley of Jefferson, Madge McNeil of West Jefferson and Wanda Waldenberger of Arizona, also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mr. John Paul Lewis, age 88, of Boone, NC died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. Mr. Lewis was born on December 12, 1924 in Columbus, OH to the late Arthur and Clyde Hodgson Lewis. Mr. Lewis was also preceded in death by a brother, J.R. Lewis, and a sister, Helen Dupree. Mr. Lewis served in the US Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. John Paul worked for many years as a general contractor. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and enjoyed painting and horses. He loved the Lord and his family.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Paul Coffey. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
