Alice Wilma Jean Black Smith Miller, D. Jan. 17, 2013

Mrs. Alice Wilma Jean Black Smith Miller age 77, of Jefferson, NC died Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Ashe Assisted Living in West Jefferson. 

Mrs. Miller was born February 1, 1935 in Ashe County to Noah Marlin and Ethel Severt Black. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents and 8 sisters. She was a member of West Jefferson Church of Christ.

Mrs. Miller loved working as a foster grandparent at Blue Ridge and Westwood Elementary Schools. She enjoyed scrap booking and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Jim Goodman, Al Dunkleman, Randy Smith, Joseph Dunkleman and Minister Tim Cannup. .

Burial will follow in Mash Severt Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Audrey Mash Jones, D. Jan. 16, 2013

Audrey Mash Jones, age 59, of North Wilkesboro passed away Wednesday morning, January 16, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 1:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Floyd South and Rev. Jerry Roten officiating. Burial will follow in the Severt Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00pm on Saturday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Jones was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, January 5, 1954 to the late Woodrow Mash and Agnes Sheets Mash. She worked 17 years at Tyson Foods. She loved her Lord.

She is survived by her husband, Donnie Jones, of 23 years of marriage; her mother, Agnes Mash, of North Wilkesboro; cousins, Wilma Clanton, Joann Hutchinson, Kenneth Sheets, Rev. Jerry Roten and Rev. Arlie Roten also survive.

Marvin Dale Riddle, D. Jan. 16, 2013

Mr. Marvin Dale Riddle, age 84, of West Jefferson, NC died on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC. Mr. Riddle was born on October 28, 1928 in West Jefferson, NC to the late John Finley and Ella Gentry Riddle. 

Mr. Riddle was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Riddle and Eddison Riddle. Mr. Riddle served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was employed by Thomasville Furniture for 29 years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11:00 am at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in the Lewis – Kemp Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Riddle is survived by: his wife of 58 years, Lucy Flannery Riddle; two sons, Marvin Dean Riddle of Elizabethton, TN and Randy Aaron Riddle of Mebane, NC; one brother, John Thomas Riddle of Elkton, MD; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Oscar Caudill, D. Jan. 15, 2013

Mr. Oscar Caudill, age 82, of Jefferson, NC died on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Blowing Rock Hospital in Blowing Rock, NC. Mr. Caudill was born on November 5, 1930 in Piney Creek, NC to the late John Jackson Caudill and Beulah Church Caudill. 

Mr. Caudill was also preceded in death by his wife, Edna Blevins Caudill, one son, Roger Caudill, two daughters, Wanda Lewis and Carolyn Caudill, two sisters, Kay Laws and Virginia Hester, one brother, Billy Joe Caudill. Mr. Caudill worked as a forklift operator for Thomasville Furniture.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Brother Ralph Smith. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Caudill is survived by: Son, Michael Lee Caudill of Creston, Daughter, Donna C. Severt of Jefferson, Brother, Greek Caudill of Durham. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Judy Kay Miller, D. Jan. 15, 2013

Ms. Judy Kay Miller age 50, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Westwood Hills Nursing & Rehab Center in Wilkesboro.

Ms. Miller was born on November 21, 1962 in Jefferson to Robert Ernest and Dorene Ham Miller.

Ms. Miller was preceded in death by her mother and sister, Shirley Miller. She loved reading, playing bingo and talking with her friends, including her special friend Alberta. She was an avid Rusty Wallace fan.

The family would like to thank Ashe Memorial Hospital, Wilkes Regional Hospital, NC Baptist Hospital, Mtn. Valley Hospice and Westwood Hills Nursing staff for their excellent care.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Minister Danny Miller and Rev. Duane Andrews.

Burial will follow in Pennington Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Friday, prior to the service.

Willa Miller, D. Jan. 14, 2013

Mrs. Willa Grey Harless Miller, age 83, of Creston passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013 at Margate Health and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlie McCoy officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00pm on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Miller was born in Ashe County on Friday, October 11, 1929 to the late Dave and Nellie Lou Little Harless. She retired from Riverview Elementary School, where she was the cafeteria manager. She enjoyed gardening and was known for her good home cooked meals. She also had a love for animals, especially dogs.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William “Ralph” Miller and a brother, Jack Harless.

Mrs. Miller is survived by two sons, Edward Miller and wife, Carolyn, of Creston and Lloyd Miller and special friend, Diane Miller, of Creston; a sister            , Martha Jane Lane and husband, Frankie, of Millers Creek; two brothers, Mack Daniel Harless and wife, Alene, of Winston-Salem and Gwen Ursel Harless and wife, Grace, of West Jefferson; two grandchildren, heather Hartsog, of Nashville, TN and Anglea Miller, of Winston-Salem, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Don Goodman, D. Jan. 14, 2013

Mr. Don Bradley Goodman, better known as “Bradley” age 92, of Taylorsville, formerly of Ashe County passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013 at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson City Cemetery with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 1-2pm on Friday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mr. Goodman was born in Ashe County on September 10, 1920 to the late Dick Mills and Mamie Ray Williams Goodman. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He ran “The Pawn Shop” in Taylorsville for many years.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Clyde Morton Goodman on December 26, 2005; four children, John, James Allen, Carolyn and Timothy.

Mr. Goodman is survived by two sons, Leonard “Bud” Goodman and wife, Nelda, of Rutherford College, NC and Ben Goodman and partner, Randy Warrum, of Tampa, Florida; a daughter, Lynda Davis and husband, Tony, of Taylorsville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Kathryn Osborne, D. Jan. 14, 2013

Kathryn Neomia Keaton Osborne, age 75, of Lansing passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy McClure officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Osborne was born June 18, 1938 in Ashe County to Andrew Jackson Keaton and Gladys Paisley.

She is preceded in death by her husband Garland Eugene Osborne.

She is survived by two sons; Danny Eugene Osborne and wife Brenda of Grassy Creek and Donnie Lee Osborne of Glendale Springs; two daughters; Mary Wantland of West Jefferson and Julie Triplett of Lansing; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Gladys Eldreth Welch, age 92, of Lansing passed away Sunday evening, January 13, 2013 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 2:00pm at Long Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Lewis and Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in the Eldreth Cemetery in Lansing.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Tuesday, one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Mrs. Welch was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, September 14, 1920 to the late Avery and Effie Woods Eldreth. She retired from Sprague Electric. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by two sons; three brothers, Glenn Eldreth, Jones Eldreth and Smith (Hoover) Eldreth.

Mrs. Welch is survived by a sister, Jean Osborne, of Lansing; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Alfred Jerry Mahala, better known as “Jerry”, age 49, of Creston passed away Saturday evening, January 12, 2013 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 8:00pm at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Roark, Rev. David Lyalls and Rev. Evan Moore officiating. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 11:00am at Price Family Cemetery in Creston.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, two hours prior to the funeral service at the church.

Mr. Mahala was born in Ashe County on June 26, 1963 to Alfred Lane Mahala and Norma Pennington Wade. He owned a salvage yard. He enjoyed riding horse in his sparetime.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kimberly Ann Mahala; his grandparents, Rudy & Danford Graybeal Pennington and Harrison & Vesta Roark Mahala.

He is survived by his companion, Janie Dixon, of the home; two sons, Lance Mahala and Jordan Dixon, both of the home; two daughters, Neica Mahala, of Mountain City, TN and Destiny Mahala, of the home; his mother and step father, Norma and James Wade of Mountain City, TN; his father, Alfred Mahala, better as “Doughton” of Creston; two sisters, Sherry Price, of Creston and Addrena Clemmons, of Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.

Archie “Mac” Roberts, D. Jan. 12, 2013

Mr. Archie Eugene Roberts, better known as Mac age 47, of Mountain City, TN died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Johnson County Community Hospital in Mountain City, TN.

Mr. Roberts was born on April 6, 1965 in Abingdon, VA to Arch Ulysses and Gladys Howard Roberts. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Roberts was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Doe Valley.

God reached down and took Archie unto His loving arms. He picked a precious flower from our garden. The most kind and loving gentle soul. Endless loving husband, most wonderful paw. Just a warm and gentle blessing to all who knew him. God needed him to put in his garden so He took from us our beautiful gift of life.

But with each day God will help us, because we know while here on earth Archie lived his life to the fullest. He always shared his main love with us all, God, his wife, grandson and his love for trucking, his family and friends. We all know he is gone to rest in a much better place.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Randy Shoun & Rev. Leon Bryant. Burial will follow in Dixon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday prior to the service. Mrs. Hudler was born on October 20, 1935 in Ashe County, NC to Worley and Nell Mullis Testerman. Mrs. Hudler was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Testerman.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Billy Joe Blevins and Rev. David Testerman. Burial will follow in Old Obids Country Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Badger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hudler is survived by: her husband, Harold Hudler of West Jefferson, NC, son, James Mark Hudler of Coolidge, AZ, two daughters, Mary Smith of Pleasant Garden, NC and Martha O’Quinn of Florence, SC, two brother, William Testerman of Jefferson and Rev. Timothy Ryan Gilley, D. Jan. 11, 2013

Timothy Ryan Gilley age 29 of Warrensville, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at NC Baptist Hospital. Timothy was born on June 22, 1983 to Steve Gilley and the late Bonnie “Suzie” Jones Lemly. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his grandparents. He loved working as a finish carpenter, enjoyed sports, riding his motorcycle and he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Sunday at Badger Funeral Home.

Jeanette NicholsMrs. Jeanette Hamby Nichols age 63, of Lenoir, NC died on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, NC. Mrs. Nichols was born on June 7, 1949 in Lenoir to Wayne Dewese Hamby and Ruth Hamby Trivette. Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her father, son, Kenneth Smith and brother, Randall Trivette. Mrs. Nichols was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Lenoir. She loved to hear the word of God preached, enjoyed to crochet and go shopping when her health allowed.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Dennis Whitt and Pastor Michael Trivette. Burial will follow in Trivette Cemetery.

Mrs. Nichols is survived by: husband, Merle Travis Nichols of Hudson, NC, two sons, Kevin & wife Nichole Smith and Kendall Smith all of Lenoir, her mother, Ruth Hamby Trivette of Creston, two brothers, Steve Wayne Hamby of Patterson, NC and Michael Trivette of Creston, NC, two grandchildren, Graylan Smith and Victoria McLean also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
