Ashe Arts Center Offers First Van Tours Highlighting Ashe County’s Barn Quilts in September, October

Aug. 28, 2013. The Ashe County Arts Council recently announced the first van tours highlighting “some of the best” of Ashe County’s Barn Quilts.  

Tours, which cost $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12, depart from and return to the Ashe Arts Center.

2013 Van Tour Schedule

  • Friday, September 6: 10 am departure, no lunch option
  • Saturday, September 7: 10 am departure with two tours, one with *lunch at Shatley Springs Restaurants and one without
  • Friday, October 11: 10 am departure, no lunch option
  • Saturday, October 12: 10 am departure with two tours, one with *lunch at Shatley Springs Restaurant and one without 

*Lunch at Shatley Springs Restaurant is not included in price

A docent will highlight the barns, points of interest and offer up some Ashe County history. The tours, which will run rain or shine, without the lunch option take approximately two hours. Throw in lunch and the tours take three and half hours.

Ashe County was one of three counties in North Carolina is be invited to participate in a pilot program creating Barn Quilts in Western North Carolina. 

The program is based on similar projects around the United States.  The original project was funded by a Blue Ridge National Heritage Grant through Handmade in America. Ashe County is part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and the mission of the organization is to protect, preserve, interpret and develop the unique natural, historical a cultural resources of Western North Carolina for the benefit of present and future generations.
