Beginning teachers received orientation this month to get to know each other and the Watauga County Schools system in preparation for the 2013-14 school year. Superintendent Dr. David Fonseca welcomed the group and told them “we are grateful you have chosen to serve as educators. No one will tell you this job is easy, but your students will come back and tell you you’ve made a difference.”

Aug. 19, 2013. For Watauga County Schools, Monday is the first day of the 2013-14 school year, and WCS spokesman Marshall Ashcraft said each school has experienced a “smooth opening” so far.

“The best we can tell, it’s gone very well … Based on all the reports we are getting, we’ve had a smooth opening,” Ashcraft said, adding that most of the central office staff members visited different schools this morning.

Ashcraft visited Mabel and Cove Creek.

“They’ve got a few new students, a few new teachers. About everybody seemed prepared for it, and it ran very well,” Ashcraft said. “It always impresses me every year I go out and I think about all the stuff that goes behind the scenes to make it happen and its remarkably smooth.”

During the August school board meeting, interim Superintendent David Fonseca said Watauga County Schools were “ready to open.”

While noting that potential work session dates for the fall and spring during the superintendent’s report, Fonseca said, “Other than that, we are just excited. Kids come back on Monday. Parents are ready, teachers are ready.”
