On March 2, as a result of the investigation, detectives of the Boone Police Department arrested Matthew Ryan Goldstein, 18, of Plantation, Fla, and charged him with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count of felony larceny after breaking and entering, one count of misdemeanor damage to real property and one count of misdemeanor defacing a public building.

Goldstein, a freshman at Appalachian State University, was taken before a Watauga County Magistrate, where he was assigned a court date of April 28 and placed under a $10,000 secured bond.

“The Horn in the West has historic and cultural significance for Boone. I know all of us who love Boone are deeply disappointed that someone thought so little of Boone that they would do such a thing. Our investigators did a fantastic job solving this crime,” Boone Police Chief Dana Crawford said.

“Matthew Ryan Goldstein, an ASU student, has been arrested. We continue to develop evidence and believe others were involved. We will work closely with the District Attorney to ensure that if Goldstein is convicted and found guilty that he will be held accountable for his crimes. We also have information to believe that this person may be responsible for graffiti in other locations in town. We will continue to investigate, and do our best to ensure that all those who were involved are made to take responsibility for their crimes.”

The Boone Police Department would like to thank the Appalachian State University Police Department and High Country Crime Stoppers for their assistance in this investigation.
