Apparel Design and Merchandising students at App State invite the public to see their work in action at the program’s Spring Showcase at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 24 at the Schaefer Center on campus.
The show will feature a series of cohesive collections created by students enrolled in spring 2016 apparel production class, as well as individual student designs from apparel construction, flat pattern design, sustainability in the apparel industry and work completed outside of the classes.
The showcase is part of the Apparel Design and Merchandising program of study, acting as a capstone class for both junior and senior ASU students, although underclassmen still take part in the pre-show program.
The annual show has been in production for nearly a decade in smaller venues on campus, but will now be held in the Schaefer Center after garnering more and more attention from the public.
Donors from Boone and Blowing Rock who have helped make the event possible will be there, and the entire Boone community is invited to join them.
“When do you hear about fashion shows in Boone?” said Blakeley Rogers, student director for the event. “You can see an up-and-coming designer.”
Faculty members, who are also professionals in the industry, will create and feature their own designs, too, including faculty director Anthony Wilson.
“For a lot of the App State students, it’s really great for their portfolio, experience and professionalism,” Rogers said.
Participating juniors and seniors will each create three to six looks for the showcase, which will feature more than 90 models.
Rogers said the showcase will show the community what the students have been learning, and will give students a chance to show off their hard work and accomplishments.
You can expect to see a little bit of everything at the showcase, including high fashion, abstract apparel, athletic designs from the on-campus Reebok Studio and sustainable designs created from recycled clothes.
“If you’re not into fashion, there’s something for everyone,” Rogers said.

App State Apparel Design and Merchandising Program
The App State apparel design and merchandising program includes the design, merchandising and marketing of apparel and textile products, which provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the global apparel and textile complex.
The skills these students will learn are necessary for the process of apparel product development from concept to consumer, which includes design production, distribution, marketing and merchandising.
