Appalachian State’s Solar Decathlon Team Hosts PARK(ing) Day Today; Check Out Our Photos Here

by Madison V. Fisler

Sept. 20, 2013. Appalachian State University’s Solar Decathlon: Europe Team, “Maison Reciprocite” has turned two parking spots generously donated by Footsloggers into a temporary “green space.”

Originally just a few parking spots on the corner of Depot Street and Howard Street in downtown Boone, the spots have been transformed using wooden pallets which have been moved around throughout the day to create different spaces. This idea reflects “Maison Reciprocite’s” theme that resonates throughout the entirety of their Solar Decathlon: Europe design.

“Part of the mission of PARK(ing) Day is to generate critical debate around improving the quality of the urban human habitat, which aligns with our mission of designing and developing a people-centric and environmentally-conscious neighborhood that displays all of the characteristics of a smarter urban community model,” said Mark Bridges, communications manager of the Solar Decathlon team.

The team has coordinated with the Watauga Humane Society to bring out puppies from the shelter to spend the day with team members and visitors to the temporary green space. The puppies are available for adoption through the Humane Society as well, and are out there to be played with, socialized and to get a little exercise.

Anyone interested in adoption will need to come out to the Adoption Center and fill out an application, said Gilda Gordon of the Watauga Humane Society. The pets will be excited to be socialized and happy to meet you.

Check out their Facebook for more information.

If you can’t make it to play with the pups and hang out with the team, here’s some photos to show you what you missed!
