Appalachian State University’s Theatre and Dance Department Hosts 2014 Momentum Dance Showcase

Jan. 23, 2014. This weekend, the Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will host the 2014 Momentum Dance Showcase on campus in the Varsity Gym Dance Studio.  The seventh annual showcase will be presented on both Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available 30 minutes prior to each performance for $5 to students and $7 to the general public.

The annual showcase is set to feature eight original pieces choreographed and performed exclusively by Appalachian students.

“Momentum Dance Club is designed to create an inclusive environment for students of all ages, interests and abilities to come together and share their love of dance,” said Kaitlyn Curran, President of the Momentum Dance Club.

The dance club was created in response to the establishment of Appalachian State’s Dance Studies major. Since then, the club and its showcase have only continued to grow.

“I remember seeing the showcase my freshman year and it had four pieces choreographed by students and two other clubs participating as well,” said Curran. “This year we were lucky enough to double that and have eight student choreographers and work with four different dance clubs.”

The 2014 choreographers include Maria Cain, Emily Goodall, Nisha Jackson, Raquelle Pollock, Jillian Robinson, Abbey Stuckey, Kira White and Lucy Winesett.

Entropy, Pulse, the Swing Dance Club and the Belly Dance Club comprise the four campus dance clubs participating in the production besides Momentum.

All proceeds from the showcase are set to fund future master classes with guest artists and to support students in expanding their dance experience.

Varsity Gym is located at 530 Rivers Street. Parking for the showcase can be found at any available campus parking lot or garage after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and at all times on weekends. Covered parking is conveniently located in the Rivers Street Parking Deck directly across the street from Varsity Gym.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is housed in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Its mission is to provide liberal arts educations for the B.S. degree in teaching theatre arts and the B.A. degrees in dance studies or theatre arts. The department also values the opportunity to offer coursework for integrated learning through the arts to the general university student population.

Vital to the support of this mission is a dynamic co-curricular production program that provides exemplary theatre and dance experiences to departmental students, the university community and the region. The departmental philosophy is to support the university’s liberal arts environment through a balanced and integrated emphasis on teaching, creative activity, scholarship and service.
