Appalachian State’s Girls on the Run Registration Now Open; New Season Begins the Week of Feb. 4

-1Jan. 29, 2013. Another season of Girls on the Run begins the week of Feb. 4, sponsored by Appalachian State University’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Institute for Health and Human Services.

Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls ages 8 to 13. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile run with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. Registration includes a T-shirt, water bottle, daily snacks and entry into the ZAP Fitness Girls on the Run of the High Country 5k on Saturday, May 4. Teams are forming for 3rd-5th grade girls at Hardin Park, Parkway, Cove Creek, Green Valley and Blowing Rock elementary schools in Watauga County and Riverside and Banner Elk elementary schools in Avery County. Teams are also forming for 6th-8th grade girls at Hardin Park Elementary and Wilkes Central Middle School in Wilkes County.

Registration fees are on a sliding scale from $25 to $120. Registration is now open online at www.gotr.appstate.edu.

Volunteer coaches are needed. Coaches do not have to be runners themselves, just dedicated individuals willing to encourage the girls and work with them to achieve their goals. A training session is provided for coaches, and a supply box is provided for each program site. Practice takes place after school two days a week, for an hour and a half, for 12 weeks.
