Aug. 16, 2012. It’s that time of year again. Boone is about to get a lot busier and a lot younger as Fall Freshman Move-In Day takes place tomorrow on the campus of Appalachian State University. The first day of classes will be held Tuesday, Aug. 21.

You can expect the same as with every year when the students return for ASU’s fall semester. There will be way more people in town (to the tune of about 16,000 or so more) and traffic will become even more congested. Oh, and you can forget about finding anywhere to park for the next several months.

According to the ASU Fact Book, total enrollment for the 2012 fall semester is projected at 17,431, up 86 students from last year’s fall enrollment. Not all of those students will be coming to Boone, however, due to ASU’s off-campus/distance learning programs. The ASU Fact Book projects that for the 2012 fall semester there will be 16,106 students enrolled here at the main campus in Boone.

According to Sheila Burleson, business services coordinator with University Housing, there are 5,819 students out of those slightly more than 16,000 expected to be living on campus this fall. Approximately 3,000 of them will be new freshmen.

Some students are already settled in. Students who attended Transfer Make-up Orientation moved into their rooms on Aug. 14. Those who attended the Freshman Make-up Orientation yesterday obtained their room keys, were assigned their residence halls and moved in from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tomorrow’s official Freshman Move-in Day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Incoming freshman have been notified via email of their specific check-in times and student volunteers will be available on campus to help. Students can check in at or any time after their specified check-in time up until 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, returning students will move back into their rooms between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. They too were notified via email of their assigned rooms and check-in times. Volunteers, however, will not be available to help returning students move in.

It’s always an exciting time of the year in the High Country when ASU fills back up. Though our little town can get a bit crowded, local businesses are always happy to see an influx in new revenue as a result of the returning young faces.
