Oct. 6, 2014. Tuesday, Oct. 14, Boston hip-hop duo, Aer, is coming to Boone. The artists will be taking an aside from their House Party Tour with rapper Dizzy Wright to take the stage at Legends at Appalachian State University.
Made up of David von Mering and Carter Schultz, the pair have been fully independent since their start in 2010.
“We don’t have anything against labels, but we’re also not particularly in love with them either. We talk [to labels], but it’s going to be down the road. It’s going to be the right one, a trustworthy one, and a long term one. You just really have to see eye to eye,” commented the duo.
At just 21 years old, it is smart decisions like remaining independent that have kept the twosome rising together to the top of the music industry. Aer worked the crowd at several festivals in 2014 including Outside Lands, Summer Set and Bumbershoot. In between sharing the stage with some of music’s hottest names such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Iggy Azalea, Aer joined the Dirty Heads and Pepper on a summer tour.
The band’s debut album, The Bright Side, quickly shot to No. 1 on the iTunes Album Charts. Aer’s self-titled sophomore album was released earlier this year reaching No. 26 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. The album also hit No. 5 on iTunes. The name, Aer, comes from the Fresh Aer movement and carries a lot of meaning for von Mering and Schultz. This is a passionate subject for the two.
“[The Fresh Aer Movement] is what we rep. It’s just something you can depend on, something you need around in your life.”
Aer’s musical style has been influenced by a number of artists. Sublime and Kid Cudi are most notably among these.
“Luckily we have grown up in a time where musical fusion is prevalent and that sort of rock-rap genre,” Schultz said.
With songs like “Pretty Lady,” and “Whatever We Want,” Aer has captured the attention of today’s youth culture much like the artists they love. The band’s combination of reggae, rock and hip-hop has created a smooth sound that is full of surprises and worthy of repeat listening. Aer’s unique delivery flawlessly gels with the music that is currently in demand while giving them their own distinct edge.
“We don’t like to put ourselves in just one lane,” they explained. The duo prefers to be known as an artist that can be put into several different categories.
