May 6, 2013. For the fourth consecutive year, an Appalachian State University student has won a national contest for a white paper highlighting research on issues facing the wholesale insurance industry.
Steven Schallau of Charlotte was one of two students winning the annual White Paper Contest sponsored by American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA) Education Foundation (AAMGA). His paper examined problems and solutions for North Carolina and South Carolina’s coastal property insurance programs. The other student winner was from Utica College in New York.
Schallau is a senior in Appalachian’s Walker College of Business, triple majoring in marketing, risk management and insurance, and finance and banking.
This is the fourth year the AAMGA has presented the award, which attracts submissions from across the United States. Winning papers are selected based on soundness of industry knowledge, usefulness to other members of the industry, and innovation and creativity.
Previous winners from Appalachian were Ben Robbins in 2010, Lisa Blair in 2011 and Justin Litaker in 2012.
Schallau will receive a $1,000 award and be recognized at the AAMGA’s 87th Annual Meeting in New Orleans May 19-22, which he will attend with his professor, Dr. David Wood. Schallau’s paper will be released to trade publications and printed in AAMGA’s newsletters.
AAMGA’s executive director, Bernie Heinze, announced Schallau’s accomplishment while on campus giving the keynote address at the 25th anniversary celebration dinner for the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center.
The Brantley Risk and Insurance Center works to develop the strongest possible program in risk management and insurance, consistent with the mission of the Walker College of Business. The center facilitates interaction between students and professionals in the insurance industry, supports research and faculty development, assists the industry in the design and delivery of training and continuing education programs, and helps educate the public about the role of insurance in modern life and the function and activities of the insurance industry.
The risk management and insurance program in the Walker College of Business is among the “10 Largest Risk and Insurance Schools,” according to Risk Management magazine. Its September 2012 issue ranked the program at No. 5.
Since 1926, the AAMGA has served as the trade association to international wholesale insurance professionals, and as a leader representing the interests of its members before the federal, state and local governmental and regulatory agencies, to elected officials and other industry trade associations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. AAMGA represents more than 400 members.
