April 14, 2014. An Appalachian University Student fell 70 feet while rappelling at a climbing area near the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday afternoon, according to WSOC-TV.

After a lengthy rescue operation, Chad Mullins of Waxhaw was flown to Johnson City Medical Center and is now in “good condition,” recovering in the hospital after suffering a serious shoulder injury and possible head injury, according to the report on Monday morning.

Along with friends, Mullins was rappelling in the Little Lost Cove area. The rescue operation, which included an ATV, took several hours because of the remote terrain.
