Appalachian Rollergirls to Host ‘Be Your Own Superhero’ Dance Party Fundraiser Saturday, March 23

By Madison V. Fisler

March 20, 2013. The Appalachian Rollergirls, the local all-women’s roller derby team, is hosting a “Be Your Own Superhero” dance party fundraiser on March 23.

The event will be raising money for the Appalachian Rollergirls to rent a van to transport the team to compete against the Vette City Vixens in Kentucky at the Vette City Rollerderby being held on April 6 in Bowling Green, Ky.

UnknownThe fundraiser will be held at the VFW Post 7031 starting at 8 p.m. The cover charge for the event will be $5, cash only, and is for guests 21 years and up. The Appalachian Rollergirls encourage everyone in the area to come by, have fun and support the cause.

“We will be having bar games and a raffle for prizes, as well as a costume contest,” said Jennele Vaquera, the team captain.

The costume contests include best duo, most unusual and best male and female.

“Prizes were donated by many of the local businesses, such as Haircut 101, Black Cat, Lucky Penny and Boone Drug among many others,” Vaquera said.

The Appalachian Rollergirls are an all women’s roller derby team founded in March 2010 that is based in Boone, North Carolina. Their roster consists of 18 local area women with the goal of “having fun and encompassing female athleticism and helping the community at the same time”.

After the Vette City Rollerderby, the Appalachian Rollergirls will have a home bout at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina where they will face off against The Apocalypstix on May 4. All proceeds from that bout will benefit the ASU chapter of Operation Smile, which helps children suffering from cleft palate.

The Appalachian Rollergirls have done many events that benefit local charities, such as Oasis, The Hunger and Health Coalition and many more.

“We are always looking for more skaters and for people who want to get involved in any way,” Vaquera said.
