By Mariel Gambino

July 3, 2013. Jane Blackburn has been named the director of libraries for Appalachian Regional Library. Blackburn is the former director of library services at Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount.

janeblackburnBlackburn grew up in Tuscumbia, Alabama and attended Asbury College in Kentucky. She majored in English and then traveled to UNC-Chapel Hill to receive her MA in English.

After marrying in Virginia Beach, Blackburn ended up back in NC in Rocky Mount where found a job driving a bookmobile. Craving more knowledge, Blackburn returned to school and attended NC Central University to get her Master of Library Science. She was hired at Braswell Memorial Library in 2010.

Blackburn and her husband have always loved the idea of retiring in the mountains. The job as the director of Libraries for Appalachian Regional Library was perfect after they bought a home in Vilas. She is looking forward to settling in and spending the rest of her life here.

Blackburn will work out of the Ashe County Public library and make weekly visits to Wilkes and Watauga libraries. Her first day was Monday, July 1.
