Summertime in the High Country means longer days, more opportunities to enjoy Mother Nature and a comfortable combination of cool air and warm sunshine. It also means a world of culture and entertainment will open in our own backyard as An Appalachian Summer Festival rolls into town.
Brought to you by the Office of Arts and Cultural Programs at Appalachian State University, this powerful multidisciplinary festival has been bringing an expansive array of performances to Boone for folks from all walks of life to enjoy.
For the 32nd year in a row, App Summer will return as one of the most respected, critically acclaimed and sought-after arts programs in the Southeast.
While a complete schedule of events for this year’s festival has not yet been released, its rich tradition in the High Country promises another great season is in the works.
The dates that have been released tell us that the festival’s annual Weicholz Global Film Series will bring us “Labyrinth of Lies” (2014), “Difret” (2014), “The Dinner” (2014), “Baba Joon” (2015). “3 Hearts” (2014), “Tangerines” (2013).
Titles featured in the Young People’s Global Film Series will include “Oddball and the Penguins” (2015), “On the Way to School” (2013), “Bell and Sébastian” (2013), “Marie’s Story” (2014).
The six galleries at ASU’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts will play host to a variety of contemporary art exhibitions.
Live theatre and dance performances will include “William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play” by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, Rioult Dance NY with music by the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble and “Mauzy” by In/Visible Theatre.
Among the musical acts slated to perform are the Eastern Festival Orchestra directed by Gerard Schwarz, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo with Melissa Etheridge, the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble, Pink Martini, the Jerry Douglas Band and North Carolina’s own ever-popular folk duo The Avett Brothers.
The festival will also include the annual Rosen-Schaffel Competition for Young and Emerging Artists in partnership with the Hayes School of Music.
