App State’s Commemoration of Integration To Be Streamed Via Internet Oct. 2

Appalachian State University’s Commemoration of Integration ceremony Oct. 2 will be available for view at http://streaming.appstate.edu/commemoration. The stream will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The ceremony, to be held in the Holmes Convocation Center, is designed to  inform, educate and provide deserved recognition and acknowledgement to the historic integration at Appalachian.

The program will honor former students and faculty who played a role during this time. Faces of Courage award recipients are:

Barbara Reeves Hart ’65 of Gastonia, the first African-American to earn a master’s degree from Appalachian. Hart is a retired public school speech-language pathologist.

Dr. Carolyn Anderson ’69 of Winston-Salem, the first African-American, full-time faculty member at Appalachian. She retired as associate director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Winston-Salem State University.

Dr. Willie Fleming ’80 ’84 of Charlotte, who helped found and was the first director of the university Gospel Choir. He also was an integral member of the Black Student Association and the Black Faculty and Staff Association. He currently is an associate professor of psychology and counseling and coordinator of school and mental health programs at Gardner-Webb University.

Dr. Zaphon R. Wilson ’76 ’77 of Raleigh,  a member of the faculty in the former Department of Political Science and Urban Planning and Geography and the university’s first assistant to the provost for minority affairs. He currently is dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and professor of political science at Saint Augustine’s University.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Harry Williams, president of Delaware State University. Williams earned his bachelor’s, master’s and educational specialists degrees from Appalachian.

Artist and alumnus Darrick Claiborne ’95 will present a commemorative painting to Chancellor Sheri N. Everts during the program on Oct. 2.
