ASU Homecoming Parade Canceled, Other Alumni and Game Day Events Moved Indoors

By Jessica Isaacs

The rain just keeps on comin’ this week, and Ray’s Weather says that cooler temps are on their way, too. The wet weather has put a damper on some of the scheduled events — the parade has been canceled and others have been moved inside — but the homecoming celebration continues at Appalachian State University this weekend.

Homecoming weekend coincides with the October edition of the Town of Boone’s First Friday Art Crawl, too. Although there’s a downpour in the forecast, the Jones House Community Center is still set to host its reception for artist David Holt and the High Country Water Media Society. Check out downtown Boone online for details and other First Friday happenings.

PARADE CANCELED

ASU’s annual homecoming parade has become one of the High Country’s favorite autumn traditions, but the consistent downpour we’ve seen this week isn’t giving up anytime soon. While other events slated for the weekend are still a go, Friday’s parade has been cancelled due to anticipated severe weather.

APPTOBERFEST/SPIRIT UNDER THE STARS

The ASU Alumni Association brings this exciting series of events to the Holmes Convocation Center on Friday night. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the inaugural APPtoberfest event will feature local food trucks, food for sale from Appalachian Food Services and Appalachian Cookie Company and the brand new Alumni Beer Garden.

The fun will continue with the Spirit Under the Stars homecoming pep rally from 8:30-11:30 p.m. with live music from the Bantum Rooster Band.

Park at the Holmes Center, JET building or Hill Street lots or at the Rivers Street parking deck and enter through the southwest or northwest entrance to the Holmes Center.

Check the APPtoberfest site for details on admission and beer packages.

GAME DAY

The McKinney Alumni Center will host alum, friends and family for the annual homecoming breakfast at 9:30 a.m.

A little (okay, a lot) of rain would have made the parade difficult, but it won’t stop Mountaineer football fans from tailgating on Saturday!

Headquarters for the alumni tailgating festivities, including barbecue from Appalachian Food Services, have been moved indoors to the Varsity Gymnasium from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. $10 admission for alumni. Go online to register for the event.

Head over to Kidd Brewer Stadium in the afternoon if you plan to attend the homecoming football game. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. and the Mountaineers will take on the Cowboys from the University of Wyoming. Don’t miss the halftime show! This year’s homecoming king and queen will be announced.
