Jan. 30, 2014. This cold January continues, but a warm spell is in sight.

As Ray’s Weather Center noted in its forecast discussion on Thursday morning, temperatures were colder in the valleys than the mountaintops last night. This trend will continue through the weekend as highs reach into the 50s on Saturday, Sunday and nearly so on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday morning, however, Boone saw its low temperature at minus 6 degrees at 7:15 a.m., while Beech Mountain’s low temperature was 2 degrees at 9:24 a.m., according to a National Weather Service report. And Jefferson in Ashe County had one of – if not – the lowest of temperatures in the region at minus 8 degrees.

According to Ray’s Weather Center monthly archive of January 2014, Boone has had four days with subzero temperatures if counting a .1 degree morning. Boone’s coldest morning was minus 7.9 on Jan. 7. Beech Mountain, though, has seven days of subzero temperatures with the lowest at minus 18.8, also occurring on Jan. 7.

As for days below 10 degrees, Boone and Beech Mountain are tied for 13 days with temps colder than 10 degrees. So far during one of the coldest Januaries on record, Boone has an average temperature of 22.4 degrees and Beech Mountain has an average temperature of 21.8 degrees through the morning of Jan. 30.
