Pickup a couple pairs of unopened socks this week and head down to the Boone Saloon on Friday, Dec. 18 for the annual High Country Throwdown and Sock Drive, which will feature some of the finest musical talent around assembled for a good cause.
Local musician David Brewer said he brainstormed the Holiday Throwdown after attending a couple of Warren Haynes Christmas James, a benefit concert held in Asheville for about the three decades.
“I [thought] I could probably pull something off, albeit on a much smaller scale,” Brewer said. “The Holiday Throwdown is imbued with that same spirit of camaraderie, cooperation and charity that are hallmarks of Asheville event.”
While the annual holiday throwdown is in its fifth year of helping fellow local musicians in need, Brewer said he also noticed two years ago the need for clean socks in homeless shelters during the winter months. Last year, the show raised $1,500 and a box full of socks.
“There’s nothing particularly sexy about promoting sock awareness, but it’s a solvable problem on which we’re attempting to shine a light,” Brewer said.
And, of course, Brewer is always down for an excuse to play music with friends.
“As much as it is a jam, the Holiday Throwdown is also a bit of a reunion for area musicians. The original lineup of Soul Benefactor will be back in action, and we’re thrilled about jamming with all of our many friends,” Brewer said. “It’s always a good time.”
Bands include Soul Benefactor and friends, The Worthless Son-In-Laws and Hill Top Riot.
