An Appalachian Summer Festival; This Week’s Events Include Arts, Concerts, Workshops and Much More

July 29, 2013. An Appalachian Summer Festival is coming to a close, but it’s not over yet! This week, there are concerts, workshops and more coming to Appalachian State University to indulge the creative and cultural mind.

Monday, July 29

  • Inkalicious: Creating with Alcohol Inks: What do you get when you combine Ranger Alcohol Inks with a paint brush and plastic paper? Absolutely gorgeous, brilliantly colorful, amazingly textured creations. No painting experience needed! This method is quick, easy and fun! This workshop is open to the public and available at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Independent Films from Around the World: La Rafle: Pre-film talk with Dr. John Pfeifer begins at 8pm and will last approximately 30 minutes. Based on the true events of the 1942 ‘Vélodrome d’Hiver round up’, La Rafleportrays the mass arrest of 13,000 Jews in occupied Paris by the French Police before they were deported to concentration camps in Eastern Europe. The story is seen through the eyes of a twelve-year-old Jewish boy, Joseph Weismann and Protestant nurse, Annette Monod. The film will be shown at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.

  • Lunch and Learn: Negotiation of the Secret Society Cloth with Dr. Eli Bentor: Join art historian Dr. Eli Bentor as he leads a gallery talk about the current exhibition Negotiations of the Secret Society Cloth. The gallery talk will discuss Ukara through it’s history, process, use and symbolism of nsibidi. This event will be located at The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. These informative seminars provide opportunities to deepen your knowledge about different aspects of the Turchin Center’s exhibitions and festival programming. Join us every Wednesday during the month of July for in depth, lunch-time talks with the experts. Bring a bagged lunch and broaden your knowledge of the arts!

  • Mixing it Up: Mixed Media Workshop: Think you have no talent for art? Guess again. All it takes is some paper, brushes, gesso and watercolor plus a variety of found objects from around the house. Create one of a kind artwork from your home and for your home. Bring your imagination and sense of adventure! This workshop is located at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and is open to the public. 
  • An Acoustic Evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin featuring Special Guest Suzanne Vega: Acclaimed songwriters (and longtime friends) Mary Chapin Carpenter & Shawn Colvin share the stage as an intimate duo, performing material spanning their vast catalogues as well as some of their favorite songs. These two iconic singer songwriters will be joined by legendary folk-singer Suzanne Vega for a special one-night only appearance. This event will take place at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts
