An Appalachian Summer Festival; This Week’s Events Include Arts, Concerts, Lectures and More

July 15, 2013. An Appalachian Summer Festival is well underway, with concerts, plays, lectures, art workshops and much more available all month long for the community to enjoy. This week, there are ensembles, plays, lectures and even a youth orchestra coming to Appalachian State University to indulge the creative and cultural mind. 

This week’s An Appalachian Summer Festival lineup is as follows:

  • Turchin Center Children’s Camp: July 15-19- This week’s camp theme is all about mythological stories and creatures from around the world! Participants will explore the imaginative worlds and create their own through various art avenues such as paper mache, etching, drawing, painting, mixed media collage and mask-making.
  • Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition with Rich Campbell: July 17, oin associate director of Outdoor Programs, Rich Campbell as he looks back at the 10-year history of the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition.  This year marks a special milestone in the competition’s history, which includes the inauguration of a new educational workshop and a special exhibition in honor of the 10th anniversary and the opening of the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Idina Menzel with the Eastern Festival Orchestra at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts on July 18. Tony-Award Winning Broadway powerhouse Idina Menzel has a diverse career on the stage and in film, television and music. For one night only, she performs a diverse repertoire of classic pop, musical theater favorites, including hits from Wicked and Rent, as well as songs from her album Live: Barefoot at the Symphony.
  • AppState Photo Workshop Supported by Nikon Professional Services on July 19: The AppState Photo Workshop represents a collaborative effort between the Outdoor Programs and the Commercial Photography Program at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Nikon Professional Services (NPS) will support and participate in the workshop by supplying Nikon pro camera bodies and lenses for the workshop participants to use on Saturday.
  • Eric Carle-The Education of a Good Picture Writer on July 19: Acclaimed children’s writer and illustrator Eric Carle discusses his craft, and the influence of some of the great artists on his work, illustrating examples of these connections in a fascinating slide/lecture presentation. Following the presentation will be an interview led by Dr. Charles Duke with a reception and book-signing to follow. Several of Mr. Carle’s works are exhibited in the Reich College of Education Building, and participants will be invited to view the works. Children (ages 4 & up) are also invited to join us for this event, and during the talk, they will be treated to a story hour and a supervised tour of the exhibited works.
  • Family Film Night: ET at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts July 19: The beloved story of the bond between 10 year-old Elliott and E.T., the lost little alien from space, has captured the hearts of millions across many generations since its release in 1982. The festival invites you and your family to relive the amazing story of how true friendship involves understanding and sacrifice and knows no bounds. Grab some popcorn, settle in and watch this classic tale unfold on the big screen once again!
  • Bozz Scaggs at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts July 20: Boz Scaggs is both a musical seeker and a man of sizable talent as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. His explorations in blues and R&B, rock and jazz have produced lasting work and a career that has brought with it acclaim, a loyal following and an enduring respect among musicians.
  • Eastern Festival Orchestra at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts on July 21: Led by Maestro Gerard Schwarz, the Eastern Festival Orchestra features some of the most extraordinary orchestral and chamber musicians from around the globe. During their performance at the festival, the orchestra will perform Sibelius’ Night Ride and Sunrise, Grieg’s Piano Concerto in a minor, Danielpour’s A Prayer for Our Time (a commissioned piece made possible through the generosity of Bonnie McElveen-Hunter), excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Griffes’ Poem for Flute and Orchestra
