An Additional $21,558 Awarded to Deserving Nonprofits at the High Country Women’s Fund Event on Nov. 11

Nov. 12, 2013. Last night, the High Country Women’s Fund held a meeting at the Meadowbrook Inn in beautiful Blowing Rock to award additional grants to local agencies after the 2013 award cycle came to a close. The event included a “speed date” style meet and greet with the many councils within the High Country Women’s Fund, which allowed ladies to go around and learn about all the things that the organization does. 

The Women’s Fund awarded grants to the following organizations:

  • Children’s Council
  • Children’s Playhouse
  • Community Care Clinic
  • Daymark Recovery Services
  • Hospitality House
  • WAMY
  • WeCAN

The Children’s Council is a nonprofit organization that provides resources to help the community invest in children so that they are prepared to succeed in school. The High Country Women’s Fund originally awarded the Council $9,000 to go toward childcare for parents taking GED classes. At the event last night, Crystal Kelly accepted the award of $3,000 in additional funding to meet their total need of $12,000. 

The Children’s Playhouse is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a creative play space for families. In the original 2013 awards, the Children’s Playhouse received $1,000 in funding for scholarships for children. At last nights event, Kathy Parham accepted $500 in additional funding, enough for an additional five scholarships, bringing their total to 15. 

The Community Care Clinic is an organization that links uninsured patients with low cost and free healthcare and dental care. The Community Care Clinic was originally awarded $10,000 in 2013, but last night Melissa Selby accepted an additional award of $3,500 to go toward providing quality dental care from Appalachian Dental Care. 

Daymark Recovery Services, which offers guidance, light, and hope to citizens of all ages who may need services in the areas of mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities, was originally awarded $2,000 in the 2013 award cycle to go toward childcare for children whose parents are undergoing drug treatment programs due to drug court. At last night’s event, Claudia Thiel accepted an additional $1,500 for the organization.

Hospitality House, a non-profit crisis agency that serves seven counties, originally received $7,000 in the 2013 awards cycle to go toward programs and services for women and their children. At last night’s event, Lynn Mason of Hospitality House accepted an additional $3,000 in funding. 

WeCan, which assists people in our community facing eviction, utility cutoffs, heating fuel shortage and prescription medication needs, originally received $4,000 from the High Country Women’s Fund during the 2013 cycle, but was awarded an additional $3,000 to help women as needed in Watauga and Avery County. The award was accepted by Graham Doege-Osler.

Mountain Alliance, which is a community of individuals committed to providing Watauga County high school aged youth with opportunities to explore and develop their leadership potential through experiential learning, was originally awarded $5,500 was awarded an additional $4,058 to go toward the LIFT Program (Leadership Initiative for Female Teens). 

WAMY, which promotes family self sufficiency, was originally awarded $6,000 to go toward serving women in Avery and Watauga County with emergency assistance, but was awarded an additional $3,000 to go toward the program. 

In total, an additional $21,558 was awarded at the event to the worthy organizations listed above, not including the original 2013 awards which totaled $59,000. In all, this year the High Country Women’s Fund gave more than $80,000 to organizations in need.
