Alta Vista Gallery in Valle Crucis Invites Art Lovers to Gallery Receptions Each Month Through October

by Madison V. Fisler

June 11, 2013. The Alta Vista Gallery invites the community to meet some of their local artists and to view their newest works at monthly receptions on the fourth Saturday of each month starting in June from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

image0The June reception, which will run from June 22 and 23 will feature local Linville artist Joan Sporn, who always seems to havea new trick up her sleeve. As one of the best-selling artists in the High Country, Sporn will continue to show new oil landscapes in her usual style of loose Impressionism with heavy texture, but she will also show work in a new medium, which will involve wax. There are at least “30 Shades of Sporn” so there will be a great variety in the 30 new paintings that she will be displaying. The artist herself will be present on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The July 27 reception will feature new oils by Bennette Rowan, whose works are highly collected for their unusual subjects and compositions, gestural brushwork and bold colors. The theme of Rowan’s show is “Becoming One with Nature” and will feature oils that focus on flower gardens with birds and other animals, as well as humans enjoying nature.

The Aug 24 reception will show new oils by Sheila Hancock and will include her traditional mountain landscapes, as well as a new style that is very different: abstract figures in landscapes, painted with a palette knife instead of brushes.

The September reception will fall on Sept 28 and feature “Mountains and Gardens,” a collection of oil paints by artist Jean Pollock.

The Oct 26 reception will feature Impressionist oils by Amos Westmoreland, and will also double as the gallery’s 23rd birthday party. Cake will be available for guests as they view the artwork.

The Nov 30 reception falls on the 5th Saturday, and will feature the annual Christmas Open House at Alta Vista Gallery. This is a public Christmas party that will feature smaller paintings and other art items that can be given as gifts. The gallery will be decorated for Christmas and there will be Christmas cookies available for guests.

Now in it’s 23rd year, Alta Vista Gallery is locoated at 2839 Broadstone Road in historic Valle Crucis, between the Mast Farm Inn and Mast Store Annex, only 10 minutes from Boone. For a map, directions and more information, visit their website here

“These receptions are creative and fun,” said Maria Hyde of Alta Vista Gallery.

“They are a lot of hard work but they are so much fun.”
