Actors, Singers, Dancers Called to Audition Saturday for 65th Horn in the West Season

Editor’s Note: SAHA had planned to hold local auditions in January, but the snowstorm caused the organization to postpone. Now, local auditions are scheduled for Feb. 6 at the Valborg Theatre. Registration is at 9 a.m. with children to audition at 9:30 a.m. and adults at 10 a.m.

Boone’s own Horn in the West, presented by the Southern Appalachian Historical Association, has played an integral part in local history.

It’s the oldest revolutionary war drama in the country, and has served as an entry-level career opportunity for young performing artists and technicians since its premier in 1952. On Saturday, Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. at Appalachian State University’s Valborg Theatre on Howard Street, you can sign up to audition for its 65th anniversary production this summer.

Horn in the West Director Teresa Lee, also a professor at ASU’s theater and dance department, said the show honors and celebrates America and its fight for freedom, incorporating elements of mountain heritage and the western mountain movement with Daniel Boone as a central figure in the story line.

“We are looking for people who are hopefully somewhat experienced, but we will also consider anyone who’s interested in auditioning,” Lee added.

All positions are paid, as the production will accept a range of people with varying experience levels for the seven-week commitment. Lee said volunteers who would like to be involved offstage are welcome to the auditions. They should indicate that at check-in with a volunteer coordinator.

Child auditions begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, with adult auditions closely following at 10 a.m. Actors must prepare a one-minute monologue and singers have up to 90 seconds to perform. Dancers must bring appropriate dance clothing. Local dancer Shauna Godwin will be choreographing the dance portion of the play.

“We’ve worked with many actors who’ve launched great careers — one even on Broadway — and we’ve had people who’ve started families and personal lives with the people they’ve met at Horn in the West.” Lee said. “It’s a family atmosphere.”

The Horn in the West season will begin this summer with a gala preview show on June 17, officially opening June 18 and continuing through Aug. 6.
