Avery Sheriff’s Brief: Two Arrested After Meth Burn Pile, Two for Pot Handoff in Jail, One for Vehicle Theft

Johnson and WebbJune 9, 2014. On May 28, detectives with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office went to a residence on Mollies Branch Road to follow up on information about possible methamphetamine activity. While at the home detectives located several “burn piles” in the yard of the residence.

The burn piles contained evidence that someone had been cooking methamphetamine.

The detectives spoke with two people at the residence and later obtained a search warrant for the residence. As a result of the investigation 39-year-old Robert Johnson and 44-year-old Lena Webb have been arrested and each received a $15,000 bond.  Both were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Dwelling and Possession of Precursor Chemicals.

On May 31, detectives with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at the Avery Mitchell Correctional Institute.  Correctional Officers at the Correctional Institute reported that 28-year-old Kirby Brewer of Asheville brought in some marijuana to an inmate at the Institution.

The inmate, 31-year-old James Hyatt, received the marijuana inside the prison but correctional officers were able to retrieve the marijuana.  Both Brewer and Hyatt have been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance on Prison Premises. Both were given $10,000 bonds.

RussellOn the evening of June 6, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a stolen vehicle from Old N.C. 181 in the Montezuma community. Officers later located the vehicle and the suspect driving the stolen vehicle.  Arrested was 38-year-old Harold Russell of Roan Mountain.  Russell was placed on a $20,000 bond.  Russell is charged with Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of Stolen Property and Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle.
