While folks aren’t exactly beating down the door to vote in the June 2016 primary, Watauga County Board of Elections Director Matt Snyder said that the voter turnout was “decent” for a Thursday morning.

Before noon on Thursday about 100 people had voted early and the early voting total stood just shy of 500, Snyder said.

A second primary is occurring because courts ruled that the 2011 redistricting by the GOP was unconstitutional and ordered the N.C. General Assembly to amend, locally, the 5th congressional district, which is now comprised of Alleghany, Alexander, Ashe, Avery, Forsyth, Surry, Stokes, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties.

For the High Country, all the respective party ballots will look similar with races for the 5th District in the U.S. House and candidates for N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice.

On the Republican ballot, voters may choose between Pattie Curran and incumbent U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx to represent the GOP in the general election for the congressional race. On the Democratic side, voters may choose between Jim Roberts, Charlie Wallin and Josh Brannon to represent the Democrats in the general election for the congressional race. Learn more about the congressional candidates here.

All voters have the opportunity to vote for one N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice: Michael Morgan, Daniel Robertson, Bob Edmunds and Sabra Jean Faires. Learn about the N.C. Supreme Court candidates via this online guide.

Early voting will take place through Saturday, June 4 at 1 p.m. In Avery County, early voting occurs at the Avery County Board of Elections office. See hours and directions here. In Watauga County, early voting takes place at the Watauga County Administration Building next to the Watauga County Courthouse. See hours and directions here. See hours and directions here.

On Election Day – Tuesday, June 7 – voting will occur just as it usually does during an election day in a spring primary or a November general election. Voting will take place all day at the precincts across the counties from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
