A Successful Beginning To 2013 For Avery County Humane Society

Feb. 18, 2013. The new year has already proved successful for the animals at the Avery County Humane Society.  According to Executive Director Bruce Malfatone, 53 animals were adopted in January.  “We have a goal of 60 adoptions for February,” Malfatone said, “and already 30 animals have found good homes.”

“We started 2013 with a waiting list of 33 animal intakes, some people wanting to surrender multiple animals,” reported Board member Bill Avery.  “With some positive changes, we have reduced the waiting list to only 2 for dogs and 0 for cats,” he added.  Avery gave much credit to the Furry Valentine promotion, which goes through February.  With this promotion, all black cats and kittens and black dogs are fee-waived.

Malfatone complimented the staff on displaying many of the cats in the 2 colonies.  “Each room can house up to 7 cats and 12 kittens,” he pointed out.  “These colonies are great for the cats’ socialization and exposure.  Visitors often pause at the windows and watch the cats frolicking.”

The humane society has recently implemented a test drive option.  This means that someone interested in a pet can take it home to see if it fits well in the new environment.  “I took Mina home to see if this cat and our dog would be compatible,” said Renie Stewart.  “Now that the cat and the dog are great friends, I completed the adoption process.
