Cove Creek School Media Specialist Carolyn Dell Walters hosted a Reading and Rolling celebration in the school library Oct. 7 to honor the people that made this special summer reading program possible: the Watauga County Library staff, who work hard to fill 60 book sacks every two weeks for the program; the volunteers who delivered books to students at their homes in the Cove Creek area; and most important, 23 students who completed the program this year.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Watauga County Library, Reading and Rolling encourages the love of reading and strengthens student literacy through biweekly summer deliveries of books to students at home. For the past twelve summers, Reading and Rolling volunteers have each made four deliveries of books to approximately sixty children in Watauga County, many of whom lack access to a library when schools are not open.
Some research indicates that a substantial share of the gap in reading abilities between proficient readers and less accomplished students may be due to the lack of regular summer reading by many students. Reading and Rolling seeks to bridge that gap and support student success by making books available to local students during the summer months.
